3. ABOUTUNIVERSITY Sikkim- Manipal University is one of the oldest universities in India. It was established in the year 1995 and additionally situated at Gangtok, Sikkim. It is a private university. The university has the record of being the first university to be made private in the region. The university came into existence because of an agreement between two governments, which are of Sikkim and of Manipal. One thing to we should note is that every year the university releases a grant of around 2.25 crores through which the university provides treatment to the people for free. SMU also has recognition from the University Grants Commission that it gets under the Section 2(f) of the UGC Act, 1956. The university got UGC recognition on 9th Dec 1998 and then approval by the Government of India. All courses run by the university have approval from various regulatory bodies such as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the Distance Education Council.
