  3. TERIUniversity The Energy and Resources Institute(TERI) is a New Delhi-based research institutethat focuses on energy, the environment, and sustainable development. It was formerly known as the Tata Energy Research Institute and was founded in 1974. However, it was renamed The Energy and Resources Institute in 2003 as the scope of its activities broadened.   5. HISTORY In 1998, the TERI School of Advanced Studies became a Trust with the mission of providing academic learning programmes. However, with TERI as its supporting society, TERI SAS concentrated its efforts on producing a set of learning programmes that supported and were supported by TERI's research on energy, environment, and sustainability. Moreover, it was hoped that faculty members' academic rigour would improve the quality of TERI's application-focused research, while TERI's state-of-the-art research would keep the curriculum of TERI SAS's programmes fresh and raise its societalrelevance. In addition, the University's mission and vision were further strengthened in 1999, when the University Grants Commission granted it "Deemed to be University" status, as notified by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Department of Education, Government of India, notification no F9-19/95-U-3 dated 5 October1999. Since its founding, the Deemed University has provided students withnot only world-class education, but also an environment that allows them to create new views on their fields of study.
