  1. Types Of Surgery For Cancer Treatment Cancer treatment often involves surgery, which plays a crucial role in removing tumours and cancerous tissue. Different types of surgery are used depending on the cancer's location, stage, and type. Here are the main types of surgery for cancer treatment: 1. Primary Surgery (Curative Surgery) Primary Surgery (Curative Surgery) • This is the most common type of surgery used to remove the tumour and surrounding tissue. The goal is to completely remove the cancer, providing a potential cure. This type of surgery is often performed when the cancer is localized to a specific area and has not spread to other parts of the body. 2. Debulking Surgery Debulking Surgery • In some cases, a tumour is too large to be completely removed. Debulking surgery involves removing as much of the tumour as possible, which helps to relieve symptoms, reduce the cancer’s size, and improve the effectiveness of other treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiation. 3. Palliative Surgery Palliative Surgery • Palliative surgery is not intended to cure cancer but to alleviate symptoms caused by the cancer, improve comfort, and enhance the patient's quality of life. This type of surgery may be used when the cancer is too advanced to be removed entirely, but there is still a need to address issues like obstruction or bleeding. 4. Preventive Surgery (Prophylactic Surgery) Preventive Surgery (Prophylactic Surgery) • This type of surgery is performed when a person has a high risk of developing cancer due to family history, genetic factors, or other risk factors. Preventive surgery removes tissue or organs before cancer develops. For example, a prophylactic mastectomy (removal of the breast tissue) may be done for women with a strong family history of breast cancer or genetic mutations like BRCA1 or BRCA2. 5. Minimally Invasive Surgery Minimally Invasive Surgery • Minimally invasive surgeries use smaller incisions, cameras, and specialized instruments to remove tumours or perform biopsies. Techniques like laparoscopy and robotic surgery allow surgeons to access cancerous areas with less disruption to surrounding tissue, resulting in faster recovery times, reduced risk of infection, and minimal scarring. 6. Reconstructive Surgery Reconstructive Surgery • Reconstructive surgery may be required after cancer surgery, particularly when cancer removal affects appearance or function. This can involve reconstructing a breast after a mastectomy,

  2. restoring a part of the body that was removed, or rebuilding tissue that was affected by cancer. The aim is to restore the form and function as much as possible. 7. Laser Surgery Laser Surgery • Laser surgery uses focused light to destroy cancer cells or shrink tumours. It is typically used for cancers that are accessible through endoscopes (such as in the lung, colon, or esophagus). Laser surgery can remove early-stage cancers, as well as help relieve blockages caused by tumours. 8. Cryosurgery • Cryosurgery uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy abnormal cells or tumours. It is commonly used for certain types of skin cancer, precancerous lesions, and some internal cancers. Cryosurgery can target smaller, localized areas without the need for extensive incisions. Surgery is a vital aspect of cancer treatment, offering various approaches depending on the cancer's characteristics and the patient's health. Whether aimed at curing, reducing, or alleviating symptoms, surgical options help to manage cancer effectively. The type of surgery used will be determined by the cancer's stage, location, and the overall treatment plan recommended by the healthcare team. Each type has its own set of benefits and risks, which should be discussed with the surgeon to determine the best approach for each individual case.
