  1. Pencil Drawing Tips: 7 Most Useful Tips for Beginners 1. Make use of scrap paper and glassine to stop smudging A piece of scrap paper underneath your hand while you draw will prevent you from placing it on your drawing, which could smudge your work. (I realize many of you already know this, but I am sharing this tip for beginners) 2. Save good paper to make scrap I have a file for a quality paper that's currently scrap. I can test colors by layering them, using blenders, and observing how the colors appear on the identical (good) paper I'm creating the pencil drawing on. 3. Apply a gentle touch when layering I began with a heavy hand and discovered that I had lost my paper's tooth quite quickly and could not paint colors. If you begin with a light hand, you'll be able to add more colour later on. That’ll make your pencil art look more sharp. 4. Start working between light and dark I like to work in a light-to-dark direction to ensure that my colors blend seamlessly and do not get a cloudy appearance. Of course, there's always an exception to the rule. On Pastel Mat, for example, it is possible to go from light to dark. 5. Blend using OMS or a white pencil. To help pencils blend and appear more painterly, you can paint over them using: * A blending pencil *A white pencil. (Prisma color Premier White is very excellent) * A lighter colour (i.e. light pink, which blends with darker purples and pinks) * A tortillon * Odourless Minerals Spirits like Zest-it or Gamsol Overall, I recommend mixing with a white or lighter pencil using extreme pressure. Then you can add colour using dark pencils on your pencil drawing. 6. Get beyond the "ugly duckling" stage I am not a fan of calling artwork ugly, but there's an era when I get discouraged and believe that my work isn't good enough. I've discovered that I need to continue adding layers of colour. . . The drawing will eventually emerge, and I'll feel delighted and excited to move on. 7. Use a fixative to secure extra tooth (if you require it)

  2. Sometimes, the paper may lose its tooth even using a light touch that’ll make your pencil art looks unpleasant. There are, fortunately, workable fixes that can be used to restore the tooth to paper. Brush and Pencil also have an ingredient that could create tooth.
