  1. 7 Applications of Thermal Paper Technology

  2. Thermal paper technology is essentially simple. Paper forms the substrate and a coating of transparent dye and developer mixture go onto the paper. This may be overlaid with a protective coat. The transparent dye turns black where a heated point touches it. This makes thermal paper admirably suited for printing of text and graphics with fine resolution. There are different methods and formulations chosen to suit different end uses. The cheapest type employs thin paper stock and dye that fades over time. More expensive types have a thicker paper base and dye formulation that lasts. Since its invention in the 1960s and with the availability of printers with thermal print heads, thermal is the paper of choice in POS, retail, fax and transaction printing to name a few of its uses. • Here are a few applications where thermal paper technology is the undisputed choice: • Fax printing: thermal printing is noiseless and does not require inks and a thermal print head lasts longer, which is one reason why many economically priced fax machines use thermal paper rolls. Thermal paper used in fax is about 50 microns thick and has a normal dye coating with the possibility of prints fading over time. More expensive types deliver prints with a longer life • Bar code printing: Inks can smudge and toner can spread, making it impossible for bar code scanners to read the stripes. Thermal printing does not spread, smear or smudge and is ideal for printing bar code labels.

  3. POS Receipts: Thermal printing is fast and noiseless and is the universal choice for POS terminals because of the speed of printing, so useful when there is a long queue at the cash counter. Majority of thermal paper rolls used in receipt printingare the economically priced ones with prints likely to fade over time. • Transaction prints: Transaction documents cover documents printed during the course of transactions involving accounting, insurance or public safety. Since the documents need to be preserved better quality thermal paper rolls are used for transaction prints. • Medical and health care: One can find thermal paper rolls used for printing labels affixed on bottles and blood bags. There are also other uses such as printout of an ultrasonic scan or MRI print that will go into a patients file for diagnosis. Thermal paper for such purposes is sold as fanfold sheets. These may or may not have a grid overlay for convenient interpretation of prints from EKG and ECG machines. • Printing of tags, amusement tickets, cinema tickets: The versatility of thermal paper and printers allows the use of small, hand-held devices to print out receipts and tickets on the spot. The same versatility allows its use in shipping warehouses where personnel can carry such printers and affix labels on cartons, with or without barcode printing. • Delivery notices and citations: Since notices and citations such as those issued by gas inspectors or automobile inspectors need to be near-permanent, thermal paper used here may have a synthetic base or a superior coating that will give permanent non-fading prints.
