  1. Slip Disc: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment | Bombay Spine Clinic | Dr. Siddharth Katkade | Spine Specialist in Mumbai A slip disc, also known as a herniated disc, is a common spinal condition that can cause back pain, numbness, or weakness. It happens when the soft cushion-like material inside the spinal disc bulges out through a tear in the outer layer. This can press on nearby nerves, leading to discomfort or severe pain. What is a Spinal Disc? Your spine is made up of vertebrae (bones) stacked on top of each other. Between each vertebra is a disc that works as a cushion or shock absorber. Outer layer (Annulus Fibrosus): Strong and tough. Inner layer (Nucleus Pulposus): Soft and jelly-like. When the inner jelly leaks out due to weakness or injury, it is called a slip disc. Causes of Slip Disc Several factors can lead to a slipped disc: Aging: Natural wear and tear (degeneration of discs). Heavy lifting: Lifting weights incorrectly. Poor posture: Sitting for long hours without support.

  2. Accidents or injury: Sudden strain or trauma. Obesity: Extra weight puts pressure on the spine. Genetics: Family history of disc problems. Symptoms of Slip Disc Not everyone with a slip disc has symptoms. But when nerves are compressed, common symptoms include: Back pain (often severe and long-lasting). Pain radiating to arms or legs (sciatica). Numbness or tingling in hands, legs, or feet. Weakness in muscles (trouble lifting or holding objects). Difficulty in bending, sitting, or walking. Loss of bladder or bowel control (rare, but serious). Risk Factors You may be more prone to slip disc if you: Are between 30–50 years of age. Have a sedentary lifestyle. Do repetitive bending or lifting at work. Smoke (reduces oxygen supply to discs). Diagnosis of Slip Disc A doctor may recommend the following: Physical Examination — Checking pain areas, reflexes, and muscle strength. Imaging Tests: X-ray (to rule out other causes). MRI (most accurate to see discs and nerves). CT Scan (detailed imaging of bones and discs).

  3. Treatment Options 1. Conservative (Non-Surgical) Most cases improve without surgery. Medications: Pain relievers, muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory drugs. Physiotherapy: Stretching, strengthening, and posture correction. Lifestyle changes: Weight control, ergonomic sitting, avoiding heavy lifting. Hot/Cold therapy: Helps reduce inflammation and pain. 2. Surgical Options Surgery is recommended only if pain is severe, persistent, or if there is nerve damage. Discectomy: Removing the herniated part of the disc. Laminectomy: Removing part of the vertebra to relieve pressure. Spinal Fusion: Joining two vertebrae together for stability. Prevention Tips Maintain good posture (sit straight with back support). Stay active (regular exercise strengthens back muscles). Lift properly (bend knees, not your back). Keep a healthy weight. Avoid smoking. When to See a Doctor Seek immediate medical help if you experience: Sudden, severe back pain. Pain radiating to arms/legs with weakness. Loss of bladder or bowel control.

With early diagnosis, physiotherapy, and lifestyle changes, most people recover without surgery. Paying attention to posture, regular exercise, and proper lifting techniques can significantly reduce the risk of developing disc problems in the future.
