BEACHES & SUN MAR DEL PLATA Argentina's premier beach resort, Mar del Plata's long coastline is comprised of many beaches, from family-oriented La Perla in the north to very popular Bristol and sporty Varese in the center, from resort-oriented Mogotes and sophisticated Faro in the south to peaceful Sur even further south. Between summit and base lies a 4,000 foot vertical drop. PORTILLO, CHILE One of South America's largest ski resorts and Chile's oldest, Portillo is about two hours north of Santiago and offers 19 runs of all difficulty levels, skewing toward advanced and expert. The longest run is two miles. With just one hotel, crowds are small, and the feeling is intimate and refined.

  7. RELAXATION PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA COSTA RICA Breath-taking mineral pools, magma-heated lagoons and toasty hot volcano-fed hot springs abound in Costa Rica. Perhaps the most famed is San Carlos hot springs, where shaman-led temazcal rituals include chanting and meditation at a traditional Mesoamerican sweat lodge and steaming waters await. Sizzling thermal waters flow from volcano-heated springs in remote, rugged Patagonia. It's the ideal spa destination for those who want some eco- adventure when they emerge from the therapeutic waters. The most decadent spa address is Puyuhuapi, in the north of the region, accessible only by boat.

At Galeria River in Arpoador, a dozen stores cater to surfers and skaters. Alternatively, get a taste for Brazilian beach life and score souvenirs from vendors strolling the sands. SAO PAULO Sao Paulo is one of the most popular places for shopping, and while it isn't really the best place for bargain hunters, it has some of the best of Brazilian products side by side with international brands. There is a strong preference among the city's residents to go on shopping spree in the malls of the city, which offers protection from the unpredictable weather, with Cidade Jardim and Iguatemi both being very impressive and popular shopping malls.
