  1. Get Salon Ready Press On Nails At Home. Prepare your nails by removing old polish and soaking your nails in warm water. You'll need to take off your old polish, even if it's clear, to apply fake nails. If you have old polish on your nails will make it harder for the fake nails to stick. They'll end up falling off in a day or two unless you take this necessary step.

  2. Trim and file your nails • Trim and file your nails. Soak your nails for a minutes before you cut them – this softens the calcified growths and makes them easier to trim. If your nails are less brittle, you may be less likely to split them. Dry your hands after washing. You can use nail clippers or manicure scissors. The choice is largely a matter of preference.

  3. Consider filing your nails after you cut them • Consider filing your nails after you cut them. Cutting your nails can leave jagged edges – but it is easy to file their uniform. Use a nail file, a pumice stone, or any other hard, textured surface.

  4. Push back your cuticles • Push back your cuticles. While your nail beds are nevertheless gentle from the soak, use an orange stick or cuticle pusher to softly keep off your cuticles. This way you can make sure you're gluing the fake nails to your nails, not your skin. Gently wipe nails from cuticles to fingertips with 99% alcohol to remove any residual oils from nails. This helps polish adhere better to nails.

  5. Apply False nails, Before you start applying nail glue, take time to size out the press-on. Once you've matched the press-on to your nails, apply glue or adhesive tabs to the press-on. Place the press-on on top of your nail, make sure it's centered, and press down.
