  2. Conveyor belts are used for a wide range of transport applications like food processing, heavy industry and manufacturing. The belts are the most versatile and common type of conveyors. The belt is made of either one material or more. Linear strength and shape is provided by an under layer called carcass. The over layer is called the cover and is made of plastic or rubber compounds.

  3. What are belt materials made of? Belts are made of canvas, cotton, nylon, nitrile, polyester, nitrile, polyurethane, PVC, rubber, Teflon, weave, wire mesh, silicon or rubber. Each has their own advantages and disadvantages. The advantages include elasticity, shock resistance, oil resistance, abrasive resistance, non hygroscopic, resistance to temperature, acid resistance, excellent release properties, age resistance and good heat insulator. The disadvantages include difficulty to bond, poor strength due to continuous strength, hygroscopic, no chemical bonding and expensive.

  4. Design of conveyor belts • The belt system is determined based on the use of the conveyor system. Before choosing the conveyor belt, consider the following items: • Size of the item to be moved • Weight of the item to be moved • Shape of the item • It decides on what type of belt to decide on the coefficients of friction.

  5. Essential properties of the belt • Transverse rigidity • Flexibility • High strength • Low mass per unit length • Longer life • Simplicity and inexpensive • Low relative elongation • Fire resistant • Wear resistant • Parameter for conveyor belt design • Belt width • Belt speed • Gear box selection • Drive pulley shaft • Absorbed power

  6. Some of the commercial applications of conveyor belt are seen in agriculture, construction, forestry, food and beverage processing, mining, quarrying and factory production line. Continuous monitoring of the conveyor belt is crucial for the flawless functioning of the belt. Conveyor belt scanning both online and offline can help in maintenance of the belt in good condition thereby cutting downtime.
