From water treatment plants to chemical industries, butterfly valves have become an essential part of modern piping systems due to their reliability and ease of operation. What is a Butterfly Valve? A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn rotational motion valve that regulates flow by means of a disc positioned in the center of a pipe. The disc is connected to an actuator or handle via a shaft, which passes through the disc. When the valve is closed,

Main Components of a Butterfly Valve 1. Body: The main housing that holds all internal components. It is typically made from cast iron, stainless steel, or PVC depending on the application. 2. Disc: The component that directly controls flow. It acts similarly to a gate in gate valves or a ball in ball valves. 3. Seat: Provides a tight seal between the disc and body to prevent leakage. Seats can be made of rubber, Teflon (PTFE), or metal depending on the required sealing performance. 4. Stem/Shaft: Connects the disc to the actuator or handle and transmits motion for opening or

The operation of a butterfly valve is quite straightforward. When the handle or actuator rotates the disc to an open position, the flow path is clear, allowing fluid to pass through with minimal resistance. When rotated back, the disc blocks the flow entirely. Intermediate positions can also be used for throttling, where the valve partially restricts flow to regulate pressure or volume. Because of the small movement needed to control flow, butterfly valves are energy-efficient and ideal for automation using electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuators.
