Maryland's Soliders

  • No major battles were ever fought on Maryland soil.
  • Many Marylanders left their families and jobs to join the military.
  • Maryland’s government chose the military leaders. They were usually land owners.
  • Farmers, craftsmen, shopkeepers, and slaves fought as soldiers.
  • Maryland soldiers fought battles in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, and New York.
  • Maryland got its nickname, “The Old Line State,” from the Battle of Long Island, New York.

Maryland's Help

Marylanders did many things to help win the war. They built ships in Baltimore. Ship captains from Maryland became privateers. They attacked and captured enemy ships. They also took the cargo from British ships. They kept what they captured, some privateers became quite rich this way. Farmers raised grain and cattle for the army. The state also supplied cannons and gunpowder. Iron made in several parts of the state were used for weapons and tools. Women sewed clothing for the soldiers.
