Thinking About Your Inservice… • Purpose – define your goal for the session • When during the school year • Length of time needed • Large group vs small group • Focused vs general overview • Hands-on vs demonstration • When to hold inservice • - before school, after school • - get on inservice agenda • - repeat the session at different times • so more can come & groups are small

  4. Planning Your Inservice • Setting – make it as comfortable as possible. • Look at lighting, seating, work space, hardware • needs, no more than 2 to a computer (check • setting ahead of time if not in your facility) • Start on time – end on time • Be organized and flexible • Have enough handouts • Involve your audience -- consider asking a • colleague to talk about the features of a • particular resource • Have food! 

  5. How do you get busy teachers to attend? • Put handouts in mailboxes • Meet with them by grade level • Meet with them by department/subject • Meet one to one -- start with friend or collaborative partners • Catch their attention with a neat feature – • EBSCO’s Page Composer • EBSCO’s Alert • EBSCO’s Professional Collection • Access Science’s Q&A -- to ask an expert • NewsBank’s National Debate Topic page • Landsat satellite photo of your school

  6. A Page Composer example

  7. NewsBank does a nice job with Special Reports

  8. Check out Landsat’s satellite photos

  9. Don’t Forget… • Invite your administrators • How can you provide follow-up? • - a 2nd session • - a memo that has answers to open • questions • - additional handouts in mailboxes • - offering to co-teach their students • What about parents and the community?
