Epineuston Engloba espécies de animais que se locomovem ou derivam sobre as superfícies aquáticas; Maiores contituintes são insetos sem asas, que apresentam várias adaptações à vida epineustônica e que passam todo o seu ciclo de vida em mar aberto; Herring listou mais de 40 espécies do gênero Halobates, Família Gerridae; Ainda são necessários estudos sobre distribuição, abundância, dinâmica de populações e o papel dos organismos epineustônicos na estrutura das comunidades neustônicas.
