  3. Old Testament Reading2 Samuel 1:1-7 (KJV) Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. And David arose, and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the LORD of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims. And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. And David and all the house of Israel played before the LORD on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psalteries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. And when they came to Nachon's threshingfloor, Uzzah put forth his hand to the ark of God, and took hold of it; for the oxen shook it. And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah; and God smote him there for his error; and there he died by the ark of God.

  5. New Testament ReadingMatthew 14:25-33 (KJV) But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth [his] hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

  6. Dealing with Doubt Caravaggio’s “ The Incredulity of St. Thomas“, 1602

  7. As Christians how can wedeal with doubt? • Some Scriptures talk about doubt in the Bible • At some times in our life we may many things: • Our Salvation • The Bible • God’s Promises • God’s Vision for us, for our work, and for the church • Miracles in the Bible • Purpose in life • Who Jesus is • Sometimes we can be like Doubting Thomas who had to see the wounds of Jesus to believe

  8. What are the directionsdoubt can take? • Despair • Doom and gloom • Disbelief

  9. When does doubt appear in the Old Testament? • The word is used on three times in the King James Version in the Hebrew • The only real occurrence of “doubt” in the Old Testament is in a phrase translated “no doubt” • The verse in Job for “no doubt” is the Hebrew word “Omnam” which is translated “truly, of a certainty”, when Job was disappointed in his friends for their criticism of him

  10. When does doubt appear inthe New Testament? • The best word for doubt in the New Testament is the Greek word “diaporeo”, which means “to be entirely at a loss with one’s self, in perplexity” • This painting is called “The Incredulity of St. Thomas” so perhaps the Greek word can also mean “incredulity”

  11. When does “diaporeo” appear in the New Testament? • Luke 9:7 – Herod was perplexed about John the Baptist • Luke 24:4 – the women at the tomb were perplexed • Acts 2:12 – the Jews from many nations at Pentecost were perplexed • Acts 5:24 – the High Priest and the Captain of the temple were perplexed about how the Apostles including Peter escape from prison – an angel freed them to preach the Gospel • Acts 10:17 – Peter was perplexed and “doubted” his vision that God gave him

  12. Two Sides of Doubt • Negatives from doubt – can lead to paralysis, distrust, a doom and gloom negative mental attitude, disbelief and even moving into a realm where you start not believing in God and the Word of God, and stop listening to the Spirit of God • After doubt – there can be illumination and inspiration and after going through a period of doubt

  13. Christians sometimes gothrough a period of doubt • If you go through periods of doubt, here is what you can do:- Review and study the Scriptures in areas of doubt- Pray and ask God to show you His will and to speak to you- Remember “Doubting” Thomas – he later went on after his unbelief to become a great witness for Christ and eventually died for the faith

  14. Satan will try to get us to doubt • Satan tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden and started off by telling Eve to doubt what God said • Other people in the Bible had doubt – Moses, Gideon, David, Solomon and the disciples • But after making a connection with God, the doubt went away and when God showed His power and His will

  15. Run from doubt intofaith and trust in God • Have faith in God • Don’t doubt your salvation if you prayed and asked Him into Your heart • If you aren’t sure, then pray now to receive Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour • If you have doubts about the Scriptures, let’s talk about what the Scriptures says and read the Word • Ask for the Holy Spirit to show you

  16. Trust and Obey Daniel B. Towner • When we walk with the Lord,In the light of His WordWhat a glory He sheds on our way! While we do His good will,He abides with us still,And will all who will trust and obey! • Not a shadow can rise,Not a cloud in the skies, but His smile quickly drives It away; Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,Can remain if we trust and obey. • Chorus: Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, to be happy in Jesus,But to trust and obey.
