  1. Retinitis Pigmentosa – All That You ShouldKnow – Arohi Eye Hospital Retinitis Pigmentosa is the medical name given to a group of genetic eye disorders involved with the retina of the eye, wherein it slowly, but progressively degenerates, eventually resulting in diminished peripheral vision, and then blindness. How do you identify Retinitis Pigmentosa? If your eyes start suffering from Retinitis Pigmentosa, the earliest symptoms that should alert you include trouble adjusting to a dimly lit space, or having difficulty with night vision. Slowly, this condition leads to loss of peripheral vision, which further leads to a tunnel vision. This is when the eyes visualize glare on exposure to light. If not corrected, the disease will only progress further, leading to difficulty in seeing detailed images, and problems in central vision too, ultimately leading to blindness.

  2. What causes Retinitis Pigmentosa? The most basic reason that can cause Retinitis Pigmentosa is inheritance or genetics. Generally, the disease is a hereditary disorder that may be inherited by the child. Other than that, certain genetic mutations on the X chromosome may also cause Retinitis Pigmentosa. Any harmful changes in the genes that carry instructions to make proteins may lead to production of toxic or abnormal protein, or may even fail to make the required protein. This damaged protein or absence of protein stop the photo- receptor cells from working, thus killing them in due course. Other than inheritance or genetic issues, there seem to be no other possibilities of getting trapped with Retinitis Pigmentosa. One of the rarest conditions may be when there is no family history of Retinitis Pigmentosa, but one parent carrying the altered gene may cause the genetic mutation during the development of the sperm, egg, or embryo. How can Retinitis Pigmentosa be treated? There is no effective treatment available at the moment that can completely cure this deadly eye disorder. However, there are certain ways to manage the condition so that it doesn’t go beyond where it stands. You can thus save your eyes from further damage or complete blindness by opting for one or more of these alternatives. •Include a good amount of Vitamin A into your diet, as research has proven the vitamin to significantly slow down the progression of the condition. However, remember not to overdo it, as over-dosage of Vitamin A may lead to toxicity in the body.

  3. •You may be prescribed eyeglasses with a light amber filter which can reduce the glare you may observe when you step into the sunlight or artificial light in any space. •Vision aids such as lamps, video screens, and magnifiers can help you see comfortably despite the condition you are suffering from. •Gene therapy is one possible treatment, wherein the damaged or deactivating mutated genes causing the condition are replaced with a new gene. However, this therapy is yet on the experimental stage. •Artificial retinas implanted into the eyes through surgery may result in a promising outcome, but again, this possibility is yet under clinical trials. Although there is no confirmed treatment for the condition, yet you must never try managing the condition on your own. It is always advised that you consult a professional.
