  1. Eyes are the most important organs through which we can see the beautiful world around us and move around comfortably. Ask those who are blind and have to rely on other aids and other people’s help. This is why any problem in the eyes can frighten us, making us worried if there is any serious issue. You must have even the smallest eye problems checked and resolved at the earliest by a professional eye practitioner. While all the various parts of the eye work together collaboratively to perform, the retina plays a very important role by translating the incoming image into electrical neural impulses and send them to the brain to create a visual perception. Any problem in the retina means you will not be able to conceive what you see around properly. Hence, if you experience any visual problem, you must immediately have your eyes checked; because any problem in the retina left untreated may worsen your vision, which may finally lead to total blindness! Macular degeneration Macular degeneration is one very common eye disorder that affects the macula in the retina, which is the part of the eye that allows you to see every detail clearly. This problem can thus bring problems in reading, driving, and seeing faces clearly. The problem may not show any symptoms in the early stages, but the symptoms are progressive, which means when you start seeing the symptoms, you are already on a higher level of macular degeneration. The symptoms include blurred vision and distortion of straight lines. You could either have dry macular degeneration or wet macular degeneration. Dry macular degeneration is more common, which causes small yellow deposits under the macula, which causes retinal damage and vision loss. Wet macular degeneration occurs when

  2. abnormal blood vessels develop in the macular region of the retina, causing sudden painless decrease in vision. Diabetic retinopathy As the name suggests, this disorder affects those with diabetes. This disorder also is of two types – proliferative and non-proliferative. Proliferative diabetic retinopathy occurs when abnormal blood vessels begin to grow in the retina, leading to bleeding, retinal detachment, or even glaucoma. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy is a milder form of the disorder, which occurs when damaged blood vessels leak blood into the back of the eye, causing the retina and macula to swell. The symptoms of both these kinds of diabetic retinopathy include black spots, floaters, blurred vision, and difficulty seeing at night. Retinal vascular occlusion This is again another retinal disorder that occurs in two forms – retinal vein occlusion and artery occlusion. Retinal vein occlusion is caused by the compression of the retinal vein, which causes blood and fluid to build up in the retina, causing blurred vision. Artery occlusion, on the other hand, is caused by blockage of the arteries that carry oxygenated blood to the blood vessels. All of the above retinal disorders are severe and may lead to permanent blindness if left untreated for long. So, whenever you experience any of the above symptoms like blurred vision, black spots, floaters, distortion of straight lines, or difficulty seeing at night, you must immediately have your retina checked.
