  1. What is Tonsillectomy What is tonsillitis ? Tonsillitis is a common medical condition wherein the tonsillar glands get enlarged and infected . Tonsils are the lumps of soft tissue you see at the sides in throat .These are functionally lymph glands that are involved in immunological function to protect our body .However with certain bacterial or viral infection the tonsils may also get infected ,enlarged and cause pain What are the causes for tonsillar enlargement? • Infections ( Bacterial or Viral) • Chronic inflammatory response ( Tonsillolith , Tonsillar cyst ) • GERD , chronic peptic ulcer disease • Certain neoplasm like lymphoma ,leukemia etc ( rare cases ) What are the symptoms of tonsillitis ? • Soreness of the throat • Pain or difficulty to swallow • Congested throat ,congested tonsils • Whitish spots or whitish membrane over the tonsil • Pyrexia ( high Grade fever) • Lymph nodes palpable in the neck • Vomiting • Tonsillar enlargement can hinder speech and also may present with recurrent cold

What are the complications of untreated tonsil infection ? Tonsillitis can per se sometimes present as • Peritonsillar abcess : Unilateral enlarged tonsil, painful ,change of voice , congested tonsils and pushing the uvula to opposite side , sometimes with swollen neck nodes • Tonsillolith : whitish spots / palpable hard stones over the tonsils , usually inspissated debri / food particles that harden over time and are difficult to remove • Tonsillar cyst : Sterile fluid collection ; usually trapped mucus , may present with difficulty in swallowing , sometimes ear ache • Evolving abcess : Untreated tonsillitis may present with spreading abcess such as parapharnygeal abcess with is when abcess fluid trickles it’s way into the spaces in neck With prolonged untreated bacterial tonsillitis , it may lead to complications like • Post streptococcal septic arthritis ( joint swelling) This is due to the immunological predilection of the bacterial strain to affect joints too • Rheumatic fever : an inflammatory disease when streptococcal throat

  3. infection is partially or inadequately treated • Otitis media : the infection may also spread to middle ear causing middle ear infection What is the management protocol Always visit your clinician when you have sore throat or enlarged tonsils Self medications can be taken only with Mild Grade soreness ; if you have an unresolved pain ,or enlarged tonsils always get a Doctor’s Consult . Your doctor may prescribe you the following: •Antibiotics : if your infection is bacterial Antibiotics help to combat the ongoing infection and also address the nidus. It is always essential to finish the complete course of Antibiotics. Stopping the medications midway may worsen the infection causing it to spread •Pain killers : certain over the counter medications are prescribed These not only relives pain, but also promotes controlling the inflammatory response •Betadiene gargles : It is pivotal to do gargling with medicated gargles . This soothens the throat by acting locally to wash away debri and pus What are the home remedies that can be done ? • Maintain hood hydration,l . Drink plenty of warm liquids and bland soups • Gargling with lukewarm water with a teaspoon of salt • Using OTC medications are advisable only in Mild Grade fever /infection. Your doctor assesses you and if you have Grade 2 or more tonsils , or tonsils causing frequent pain/ sorethroat / recurrent cold / cough / difficulty in swallowing / severely enlarged or when is suspected to be due to underlying tumor , you might be adviced for a Tonsillectomy surgery. What is Tonsillectomy Surgery ? This is a surgery by which the tonsils are completely removed and hence there are bo chances of tonsils growing back . This is done under general anesthesia and may require in patient admission for few days depending on patients recovery Is the surgery painful ? Post surgery ,for a few days you may feel little discomfort in the throat which will be balanced by medications. With frequent swallowing and proper post op hygiene and care ,patient can resume to routine in a few days . Will tonsillitis go away on its own ? Only infection of tonsils may recede in a week time with proper medications and home care. However chronically enlarged tonsils do not shrink in size completely and may need to be removed surgically
