  3. Self Assessment and Career Exploration • Focus • Sigi • Meyers-Briggs • Career Key, etc. • Counseling Appointments • Talk to Alumni • Shadow • Internships, Volunteer, etc.

  4. Pack Your Bags • Resume-Multiple versions for different occupations • Cover Letter • Now you are ready to go

  5. Map Out The Best Route • Develop and implement task-oriented, deadline-oriented, personalized job-search plan-do not do this at random • Schedule time each week to work on job search plan • Set small, incremental goals and chip away at them

  6. Hit The Road • Two ways to travel • 1. Interstate Highway-Open job market-internet-easy but congested-only 15-20% of all jobs advertised-Reactive approach • 2. Scenic Route-Hidden job market-Proactive • Use both

Open Job Market Strategies • Respond to job advertisements-use only the ones applicable to use-don’t apply to everything. • Post your resume online-research and choose appropriate resume posting sites. Organize and track progress. • Participate in on-campus recruiting. • Participate in job fairs-everywhere.

Hidden Job Market Strategies • Mass mailings -use online employer directories and make little changes in cover or resume but make sure they are for that industry-Keep records • Targeted mailings -Develop list of 10-15 top companies-Locate contact names and research companies-tailor cover and resume-Do follow-up calls and make sure your cover says you will do so

More Hidden Job Market Strategies • Networking-Let everyone know you are seeking job-Meet with Career Center for their contacts-Talk to faculty-Use friends, family, etc. • You must take time to practice your interviewing skills-reflect your skills, research, mock interviews • Persevere! Don’t worry about being told no so many times, it only takes one yes.
