What is it? • Translocation is the movement of assimilates, or organic compounds generated by plants. These are substances that are produced by plant cells and are transferred by phloem tissue, including sugars and other compounds. • In order to effectuate translocation, assimilates are carried in sieve elements that collaborate closely with companion cells. • A sink is a portion of the plant that removes assimilate from the phloem, and a source is a part of the plant that releases assimilate into the phloem.
