  2. Lightning Rod Protection Lightning rod protection technologies are designed to provide protection to structures against physical damage from lightning strikes. Various technologies are available to shield a facility from lightning. The objective of the conventional lightning rod protection system was to provide a preferred path for electrical charges from a lightning strike to ground itself. But there weren’t many electronic types of equipment or complicated structures back in those days when the lightning rod was invented. In our modernized world, with high tech control systems and computers actually capturing this high voltage of electricity and letting it pass through buildings might not be a good idea!

  3. Let us consider this within the telecommunication industry. Lightning rods try to attract lightning on them in order to avoid a lightning strike at any other point. They are installed on the top of the structure and connected to a conductor cable which is bonded to a grounding system at the bottom of the structure. The purpose here is to attract lightning before any other object around and let lightning current flow down to the ground through the conductor cable. However, when a lightning rod protection is applied to a tall tower made of conductive material such as steel, lightning may still hit the rod but lightning current prefers to flow through tower body instead of conductive cable since that it would be a faster and easier path to the ground.  
