  1. Organic Fertilizers Market | Government Initiatives The growing need for food has prompted farmers to boost crop production. Nevertheless, the rising reliance on synthetic fertilizers harms the soil and affects agricultural yields. As a result, there is a global trend toward the adoption of organic fertilizers. According to Inkwood Research, the global organic fertilizers market is expected to project a CAGR of 9.24% during 2023-2032 and garner a revenue of $20.42 billion by 2032. Concurrently, governments around the world are implementing initiatives to encourage the adoption of organic farming methods and biofertilizers for crop production. The goal is to preserve soil health, minimize the reliance on chemical inputs, and enhance the use of biological & organic inputs. For instance, in India, the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), and the Ministry of Science and Technology actively encourage the research, development, and commercialization of biofertilizers and biopesticides. Examines the latest initiatives taken by governments worldwide to foster organic fertilizer use – ●The USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) Final Rule On 18th January2023, the USDA National Organic Program (NOP) provided a preview of the final rule for Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE). This regulatory update aims to enhance the supervision and enforcement of organic product production, handling, and sales under USDA organic regulations. The implementation of this final rule aligns with the mandates outlined in the 2018

  2. Farm Bill, acknowledges industry requests for updates to USDA organic regulations, and addresses recommendations from the National Organic Standards Board (NOSB). Notable revisions in this final rule include: ●Mandating certification for a broader spectrum of enterprises, such as brokers and traders, positioned strategically within organic supply chains. ● Mandating NOP Import Certificates for all organic imports. ● Mandating the display of organic identification on nonretail containers. ● Enhancing the authority to conduct more stringent on-site inspections of certified operations. ● Mandating uniform qualification and training standards for organic inspectors and personnel of certifying agents. ●Imposing the necessity for standardized certificates of organic operation. ●Mandating additional and more frequent reporting of data related to certified operations. ●Establishing authority for more robust recordkeeping, traceability practices, and procedures to prevent fraud. ●Specifying certification requirements applicable to producer groups. The conclusive enactment of the Strengthening Organic Enforcement (SOE) rule contributes to the ongoing expansion of the organic market while enhancing supervision at pivotal junctures within the supply chain. This new regulation also marks a significant milestone, constituting the most substantial modification to organic regulations since the establishment of the USDA's National Organic Program. By addressing loopholes in existing organic regulations, the rule establishes uniform certification practices to thwart fraud and enhance the visibility & traceability of organic products. Any instance of fraud within the organic system, regardless of its location, detrimentally impacts the entire organic sector and undermines consumer trust in organic products. ●Government of India’s Market Development Assistance (MDA) Scheme for Organic Fertilizers Market The Indian government, in a bid to foster sustainable agriculture, has unveiled comprehensive guidelines for providing Market Development Assistance (MDA) at Rs 1500/MT for Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) or Biodigestate derived from Compressed Biogas (CBG) facilities. This initiative falls under the umbrella of the Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan (GOBARdhan), with the objective of enhancing the production and utilization of organic fertilizers such as FOM, Liquid Fermented Organic Manure (LFOM), and Enriched Phosphate Rich Organic Manure (PROM). These fertilizers are by-products of biogas (BG) and compressed biogas (CBG) plants. The central government has allocated a budget of Rs 1451.82 crore over three years, spanning from FY 2023-24 to FY 2025-26, to support this initiative. The guidelines outline the eligibility criteria for accessing the MDA, specifying that only FOM, LFOM, and PROM produced at BG/CBG plants under the GOBARdhan initiative qualify. Additionally, these units must be registered with the GOBARdhan portal of the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation. ●Italy's ‘Organic Made in Italy’ Label Implementation In 2022, the Italian parliament greenlit a groundbreaking legislation that establishes the ‘Organic Made in Italy’ label and a comprehensive national strategy dedicated to fostering organic production

  3. in agriculture. This legislation explicitly recognizes the pivotal role of organic production in advancing social development and ensuring environmental sustainability. Notably, it allocates funds for research in organic farming and facilitates the formation of strategic partnerships among producers. Within the framework of this new legislation, organic food production is defined as an agricultural system with a primary focus on sustainability. It aims to rejuvenate the natural environment while prioritizing the well-being of humans and animals through the assurance of food safety and the protection of ecosystems. Furthermore, to fuel the continued growth of organic food production, a dedicated financing mechanism has been instituted whose funds will be generated through a two percent ‘pollution tax’ levied on companies authorized to distribute phytosanitary products deemed potentially harmful to the environment. Moreover, the law actively promotes the expansion of organic food presence in both domestic and international markets. Consequently, all public canteens and government-funded institutions will advocate for organic alternatives. Says FrancescoBattistoni, the undersecretary at the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, “Thanks to the new law, we will be able to further implement organic production in agrifood and all connected production chains. On the world market, Italy comes second only after the United States regarding organic product exports.” (Source) Organic Fertilizers Market: Governments’ Indispensable Role in Ensuring Sustainability Government assistance in the form of targeted subsidies plays a pivotal role in fostering the production and application of biofertilizers and organic fertilizers. Diverse subsidy initiatives have been instituted to encourage manufacturers and bolster laboratory infrastructure. For instance, in nations such as India and Africa, subsidies for fertilizers have induced a surplus in fertilizer utilization and an uneven dependence on nitrogen, leading to imbalances in nutrient levels. Accordingly, to ensure a more just and efficacious outcome, it is essential to tackle existing imbalances and develop subsidy programs that endorse sustainable practices and the optimal utilization of fertilizers. For which governments have an indispensable & sustainable role to play in the global organic fertilizers market. FAQs: ●How does the global organic fertilizers market address regulatory standards and certifications? A: The global organic fertilizers market adheres to stringent regulatory standards and certifications to ensure product quality and environmental sustainability. Various certification bodies, such as the Organic Materials Review Institute (OMRI), Ecocert, and the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), set guidelines for the production, labeling, and marketing of organic fertilizers. ● What distinguishes organic fertilizers from conventional fertilizers in the global market?

  4. A: The key distinction lies in the composition and production methods. Organic fertilizers provide essential nutrients to plants in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly manner. They promote soil health, enhance microbial activity, and contribute to long-term agricultural sustainability. Conventional fertilizers, on the other hand, may have a faster initial impact but can contribute to soil degradation and environmental pollution over time.
