  1. Celebrating Diwali in Goa One of the most important and famous Hindu festivals, Diwali literally means "rows of lit lamps". an event in which people gather to celebrate good conquering evil, or perhaps more appropriately, light conquering darkness; Over the course of five days, family feasts, fireworks, candles and bright lights take place, along with prayers to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi. What is the date of Diwali? It occurs in the autumn months somewhere between October and November, and the date is determined each year by the Hindu lunar calendar, coinciding with the darkest new lunar night. In 2021, Diwali falls on November 04. Diwali in Goa There are many legends surrounding Diwali, and in Goa, locals celebrate God Krishna, who defeated the demon Narkasur. During Diwali, it is common to see large figures of this demon roaming the streets, some of which are then filled with fireworks to signify the victory of light over darkness. Some of these large dolls are made of straw and paper and burned at dawn in the villages. Gifts of sweets and food are given, and locals decorate their homes with bright lights and create colourful patterns (rangoli) on the ground using coloured powder and rice, which are believed to bring good luck. Make the most of Diwali celebrations Being in Goa during Diwali is an incredible experience and we highly recommend a stay at Taj Exotica during this time. In Goa, huge statues of the demon Narcasura are made and burned at dawn. The hotel often throws festivities, including spectacular fireworks displays, to celebrate this important festival. You can also find plenty of other November holidays on our site if you'd like something a little di?erent.
