  2. Description Dr. William Swallen “ate his eightieth New Year Cake” in Korea on March 24, 1939. Forty seven years before, he had arrived fresh out of seminary as a novice missionary with his beloved wife Sallie. Do note that his colleagues do not say that he is eighty years “old” but rather than he is eighty years “young”. Dr. Swallen’s energy and initiative are so great that he puts to shame many of the much younger missionaries.Dr Swallen calls himself just “an ordinary itinerating missionary” yet he has found the time to produce a steady stream of some of the most used and timely books the Korean mission has ever had. His courses at the Theological Seminary of Korea who prepare young pastors to lead churches throughout all Korea. He’s translated or written many of the best hymns in the Korean Church’s hymnbook. His Bible Correspondence Course is a foundational work of the mission and has been used by over 16,000 students.When the Swallens moved to Pyongyang, they covered bleak the barren hillside where their house stood with lush flowering gardens including an orchard with a range of American apple trees. Passers-by marveled at the sight of fruits they had never seen before and begged for plants and slips. Soon orchards began to spring up all through the province. Today apples that descended from those original trees are enjoyed all across Korea and exported all over the world.
