  1.   Trademark       registration       application       has       been       withdrawn       for      "Herbalists"   Several parties with a long history of involvement with and devotion to herbs and herbalism worked together to minimize consumer misunderstanding about the term "herbalist" by opposing its use as a trademark by a company unrelated to herbalists.       The  US Patent and Trademark Office published a notice requesting opposition to a pending trademark registration application for "Herbalist" on June 9, 2020. HerbalistSP LLC, a firm that distributes in-store samples of adult drinks as part of its demo services in the alcoholic beverage   market, applied.       Several notable American herbalists wrote the American Herbal Products Association (AHPA), the American Botanical Council (ABC), and the American Herbalists Guild (AHG) within days of the publication's release, requesting that they "help us in maintaining the 'herbalist' trademark   free."       In early October 2020, AHPA, ABC, and AHG, along with two of the herb industry's historical trademarks – Herbalist & Alchemist and Traditional Medicinals – submitted a formal Notice of Opposition to the application with the Trademark Trial and Appeal of the Board of the United States  Patent  and Trademark Office. Following that, there were twists and turns that only a trademark attorney would be interested in. HerbalistSP LLC withdrew its trademark registration application at the end of the process. The company now states on its website, "HerbalistSP has no affiliation with medical, medicinal, or herbal products; nor with herbalism or herbalism or herbalists; and provides no education related to herbals or practising herbalism."                 "This  was  a  fantastic  chance  for  collaboration  within  our  vibrant  herbal  community,"  said Michael McGuffin, president of the AHPA. "Of course, the eventual result justified all of our efforts, comparable to our achievement in having a trademark for the word 'rooibos' abandoned   about two decades ago."
