  1. The Evolving History of Tarpaulins Tarpaulins- popularly known as tarps- are everyday utility things, mostly taken for granted. Tarpaulin cover various functions, from protecting goods in transit to sometimes providing covering to structures as well as serving as make-do shelters. Indeed, it has quite a long and interesting history that lends itself toward advancements in materials science and industrial needs for centuries. Earliest Seeds: Canvas and Sailcloth Tracing back to the age of sail around the 17th century, tarpaulin is heralded. Sailors used treated sailcloth's made of tightly woven canvass to shroud and protect the goods taken aboard during the day. Most tarpaulin fabrics contained some amount of tar in them for making them waterproof, hence the coined term "tarpaulin" = "tar"+"palling"(a covering or cloak). Those early tarpaulins were quite heavy and long-lasting and fairly effective against rain and spray from the sea. Questions on Tarpaulin Sheets 1. The outdoor tarpaulin should have the ideal GSM. For most outdoor projects, an ideal GSM would be from 150 to 250. Anything beyond 250 GSM would be the best to use if you're looking for something hardy because it offers excellent resistance from UV rays, bad weather, and tearing. 2. Do tarpaulins keep water out? Yes, polyethylene and PVC tarpaulins can be 100% waterproof. Just make sure these are adequately sealed and free from holes. Canvas tarpaulins are quite resistant to water, but they are not entirely waterproof unless treated in some way. 3. How do I repair a torn tarp? You can use a tarpaulin patch kit or tarp repair tape. For super heavy-duty applications, first sew the tear with waterproof adhesive and then apply a patch.

  2. 4. Can tarpaulins be used in the winter? Absolutely. Winter is actually the time when they become important as heavy polyester Clear Tarpaulin can now be used as windbreaks in gardens, to cover firewood, or to cover vehicles from snow. 5. How long does a tarpaulin last? The life span varies with quality and use. One world-class high-quality heavy-duty tarp can be routinely taken care of to give a lifespan of 3-5 years or even more. Conversely, a cheap tarp will last just a season. Position statement: Why you need to consider using a tarpaulin sheet in your toolkit. A tarpaulin sheet is one of those accessories that always come in handy, whether you're a homeowner, a farmer, a contractor, or just someone who likes to plan.
