  2. Whatisliteralthinking? Literalthinking,sometimesreferredtoasconcrete thinking,referstothewayinwhichweview the worldaroundus.Bydefinition,literalthinkers“may takeinformationatfacevaluewithoutthinking beyondorgeneralizingtheinformationtoother meaningsorsituations.” However,thismannerofthinkingcansometimes leadtocommunicationissuesinchildren(or adults)withautismandrelateddisorderswhen theyareintroducedtoabstractconcepts.

  3. Whydochildrenwithautism tendtothinkliterally? Childrenwithautismandrelateddisorderstendtothink literallybecausethey tendtoadoptamoreconcrete thoughtprocess. Theyliketobeabletounderstandwhatishappening aroundthem,meaningthatthey’llfindautomatictrains ofthoughttobeconfusing,astheyarenotalways sensicalorstraightforward.

  4. Whatarethebenefitsofliteral thinking? Literal thinkingcan come inhandyinmany differentareasofyourchild’s life.Forexample,it oftenenablesthemtoperformwellinschool, especiallyinsubjectsthatarebasedinfactorthe abilitytorecognizepatterns. Literalthinkingcanalsohelpyourchildrenmake smarter,moreinformeddecisionsinother areasof theirlife,asthey’rebetterabletoassessthe situationanddeterminethebestcourseofaction. Furthermore,employersareoftenonthelookout forliteralthinkers.

  5. Whencanliteralthinkingpresentaproblem? Whileneurotypicalpeoplemayfinditeasytouseidiomssuchas“undertheweather”, or“pieceofcake”,variousstudieshavefoundthat“childrenwithASDfacegreater difficultythannormalchildreninunderstandingidioms;theyfailtoconsidersocial contextandtendtointerpretexpressionsliterally.”Forexample,iftheyaretoldthat informationcame“straightfromthehorse’smouth”,thiscouldbeapointofconfusionforthem. Therapeuticservicescanalsoproveusefulwhenitcomestohelpingyourchildsee theworldfromadifferentperspective,whetherthey’reenrolledinspeechtherapyor ABA.
