Our Mission • MARBC’s mission is to enhance the position of U.S. Mid-Atlantic-based companies in Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) while attracting Russian businesses to the Mid-Atlantic region. • MARBC works to foster business relations between Russia and the CIS and the U.S. Mid-Atlantic region and to cultivate contacts and cooperation among political, economic, cultural and educational interests.

MARBC Profile • A major non-profit organization in the Mid-Atlantic Region that provides information and services related to Russia and the CIS • Established by Val Kogan in 1995 as the Pennsylvania - Russia Business Council • Primarily works in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Delaware • Organizes over 25 Russian-American trade events, seminars, and delegations from Russia annually across the U.S.

Why MARBC? • The emerging Russian and CIS market is proving to be challenging but profitable for companies in the U.S. Mid-Atlantic Region. • MARBC provides U.S. companies with the necessary tools and connections to succeed in this rapidly expanding market, and helps Russian companies to gain access to and establish a presence in the American market.

Why MARBC? • Since 1997, MARBC has been actively involved in developing cooperation with Russian regions. • MARBC has developed partnerships with nearly twenty Russian and thirty American regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and Trade Associations. • MARBC, headquartered in Philadelphia, also has an office in Moscow, Russia.

Achievements • MARBC has presented many seminar series: • From 2001 - 2003, MARBC, jointly with the U.S. Department of State, organized thirteen seminar series entitled "Russian Science and Technology Opportunities for U.S. Businesses.“ • MARBC organizes ongoing series entitled “The Changing Face of Russia” and “Business Opportunities in Russia” and brings in speakers from the U.S., Russia, and the CIS

Achievements • MARBC has been instrumental in bringing a number of high-profile delegations from Russia to the U.S. • Some of these delegations attend the C3 EXPO, Russian-American Innovation Technology Weeks, the Mid-Atlantic Venture Conference, various seminars, and the upcoming Russian Mayors’ Delegation round table in Philadelphia.

Achievements • Due to past successes, MARBC now organizes the Semi-Annual Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT) twice a year to bring together entrepreneurs, scientists, venture capitalists, and established corporations within the United States and Russian technology communities. • RANIT includes regional technology events, seminars, panel discussions, roundtable meetings, trade shows, conferences, and networking events. • Recently, MARBC has organized RANIT-BIO weeks which include participation in BIO exhibitions

U.S.-Russia Biotechnology Cooperation • Two circumstances have recently made biotechnology cooperation between Russia and the Mid-Atlantic states particularly attractive: • First, the Russian government has moved to create a “National Program for the Development of Biotechnology in Russia in 2006-2015.” • Second, governments in the Mid-Atlantic region have enacted favorable policies that have further enhanced the region’s standing as a leader in the field of biotechnology. • It is within this context that MARBC has made Russian-American scientific and technical cooperation in biotechnology one of its top priorities.

Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT) • RANIT has been established and organized by MARBC since 2003 • RANIT is now held twice a year and includes a greater number of regional technology events • RANIT is designed to bring together entrepreneurs, scientists, venture capitalists, and established corporations from the American and Russian technology communities. • RANIT is supported by leading regional businesses and governmental organizations, including the administrations of the City of Philadelphia, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, the States of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland, as well as Mid-Atlantic regional organizations focusing on international business and technology development.

Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT) • The 5th RANIT included events held in celebration of the 300-year anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin – the 1st member of the Russian Academy of Sciences • The 7th RANIT, held in mid-November 2007, commemorated the 200th anniversary of the beginning of Russian-American diplomatic relations

Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT) • Russian delegations representing the best Russian technology companies take part in the various regional technology events of the RANIT, including: • Meetings with state officials • Seminars with members of venture capital funds specializing in biotechnology • Visits to the International Incubator at the Science Center • Roundtable discussions with members of biotechnology associations in the Mid-Atlantic region The 3rd RANIT in November 2005

Russian-American Biotechnological Innovation Technology Week (RANIT-BIO) • BIO, the world’s largest exhibition and conference for experts in the field of biotechnology, is the key event held in the framework of the RANIT-BIO. • As it did in Philadelphia at BIO-2005, in Chicago at BIO-2006, in Boston at BIO-2007, and in San Diego at BIO-2008,MARBC will be serving as the official organizer of the Russian delegation to BIO-2009 in Atlanta. • In the context of the RANIT-BIO, MARBC organizes a Russian mini-pavilion and the participation of the Russian delegation in various events at BIO.

Russian-American Biotechnological Innovation Technology Week (RANIT-BIO) • Since BIO-2006, MARBC has organized a Country Seminar on Russia “Russia’s Emerging Bio-economy: New Developments in Regional Bioclusters, Biofuels and Bionanotechnology.” featuring panel discussions and presentations from leading experts on conducting business in Russia. Russian-American Biotechnological Innovation Technology Week (RANIT-BIO) • The Mid-Atlantic – Russia Business Council organizes participation in the 10th Semi-Annual Biotechnological Russian-American Innovation Technology Week (RANIT – BIO), which will take place on May 13-22, 2009 in Atlanta, GA, and Philadelphia, PA. • The key event of the 10th RANIT-BIO will be BIO 2009, held in Atlanta on May 18-21, 2009. • At BIO 2009 in Atlanta, as well as at BIO 2008 in San Diego and BIO 2007 in Boston , MARBC will be organizing a Country Seminar on Russia and the Russian Technology mini-pavilion.

  19. ITEC Conferences • The ITEC Conferences are information technology conferences offering access to the latest breakthroughs in the information technologies field, as well as networking opportunities with some of the largest IT companies in the industry. • The MARBC will be participating in ITEC New York City Metro, ITEC Washington D.C. and ITEC Philadelphia by encouraging the participation of Russian companies in the exhibition and by hosting a panel discussion entitled Thinking Globally in Today’s Economic Environment and How to Expand Globally in an IT Market.

  20. Days of Russian-American Venture Industry Cooperation • Since 2002, the Mid-Atlantic - Russia Business Council has been arranging the Days of Russian-American Venture Industry Cooperation, which takes place throughout the Mid-Atlantic States. • A Russian delegation of government and industry executives participates in a number of venture capital business events and gains invaluable knowledge about the U.S. venture capital industry. Russian-American Venture Industry Cooperation program • As the most important part of the Month, MARBC organizes Russian participation in the Mid-Atlantic Capital Conference (MAC), of which MARBC is a supporting organization. • The premier events of the Days of Russian-American Venture Industry Cooperation are the Mid-Atlantic Capital Conference, a round table discussion with Russian technology companies, a tour of the Science Center, the oldest urban technologies park in the U.S., and will conclude with the Russian delegation’s participation in the Mid-Atlantic BIO Conference.

Mid-Atlantic BIO • The Mid-Atlantic BIO Conference in Washington D.C. is one of the largest biotechnology trade shows in the region. • The MARBC is working to bring biotechnology companies together with venture capitalists as a part of the Days of Russian-American Venture Capital Cooperation. • As an official international sponsoring organization of Mid-Atlantic BIO, the MARBC will be organizing a Russian exhibition and presentation about the latest biotechnology developments in Russia.

  23. MARBC Seminar Series • Throughout 2009 MARBC will present “The Changing Face of Russia” Seminar Series. Addressing the changing business environment in Russia, this is a revival of a highly successful seminar series hosted by the MARBC after the financial crisis of 1998. New seminars will be organized throughout the Mid-Atlantic States, including Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, and New York. • This continuing series will highlight and summarize recent trends and developments taking place in Russia and discuss their affects on Russian-American business interactions. MARBC Seminar Series • Throughout 2009, MARBC will present its Seminar Series entitled “Russian Science & Technology Opportunities for U.S. Businesses.”Due to the recurring, robust success of this series, which has been held in the Mid-Atlantic region since 2001, new seminars will be organized throughout the Eastern United States, including New York, NY, Washington, DC, King of Prussia, PA, Pittsburg, PA, Princeton, NJ, Baltimore, MD, and Wilmington, DE. • Seminar sessions offer significant opportunities for technology, R&D, and science organizations to gain extensive insight into the newest Russian technology initiatives, learn about a vast array of Russian science capabilities, and explore a plethora of potential prospects for U.S.-Russia technological cooperation.

Roundtable with the Russian Mayors’ Delegation • As in the past, the MARBC will again be hosting a delegation of mayors and local government officials from the Russian Federation in Philadelphia in November, 2009. • The welcoming ceremony and roundtable discussion will be held in the Mayor’s Reception Room at Philadelphia City Hall on November 16. • The event will feature the Biennial Russian-American Business Opportunities Symposium focusing on the challenges and opportunities for business cooperation between regional companies and Russia. Roundtable with the Russian Mayors’ Delegation • In 2006 the delegation consisted of more than 30 local government officials and businessmen, including mayors and heads of administration representing more than 10 cities and regions from across Russia. • The program included a welcoming reception for the delegation at Philadelphia City Hall, a conference and roundtable discussions on the topic of current Russian-American business collaboration, a visit to the Science center, and an exhibit on the interactions between Benjamin Franklin and Ekaterina Dashkova.   28. Major Events in Russia • Traditionally, MARBC has organized American participation at a number of events every March and April in Russia, and the MARBC has combined all of these events into MARBC Month in Russia.

MARBC Month in Russia • ProMedia Tech, March 2-5; • 6th Moscow International Congress:Biotechnology: State of the Art and Prospects of Development, March 16-20; • 16th Moscow International Travel & Tourism Exhibition, March 18-21; • Goszakaz, a government procurement forum-exhibition, March 23-25; • 6th International Nano-Industrial Exhibition ”NTMEX-2009”, April 15-17; • 10th International Forum: High Technology of the 21st Century, April 21-24; • Sister-City Expo and Conference, April 25-29.

ProMedia Tech • ProMedia Tech is an international promotion and advertising technologies festival in Moscow, Russia. • ProMedia Tech is an excellent opportunity for networking amongst exhibitors and potential customers of promotional, mass media, and promotion technologies services. • At ProMedia Tech 2009 the MARBC hosted a panel discussion focusing on opportunities for Russian-U.S. cooperation in the promotion and advertising fields.

  31. 6th International Congress “Biotechnology: State of the Art and Prospects of Development” • The 6th International Congress “Biotechnology: State of the Art and Prospects of Development”, held in Moscow City Hall, is an international biotechnologies festival with a which will highlight the entire spectrum of biotechnological products including pharmecuticals, agricultural technologies, veterinary medicine, geology and industrial tecnologies, and biological products for the protection and recovery of the environment. • In the past, the MARBC has hosted the Russia-America symposium “Issues of Current Importance for Russia-USA Cooperation in the Field of Biotechnology”, and plans to continue similar programs at the event.

  32. 16th Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition • The 16th Moscow International Travel and Tourism Exhibition, the largest of its kind in Russia, is a perfect opportunity for international tourism companies to come alongside the most recent trends and developments in the Russian tourism industry. • In 2008 more than 3000 companies from 110 countries and regions participated in the event. • The MARBC is working to attract leading U.S. tourism companies and travel agencies to participate in the 2009 exhibition.

  33. Goszakaz • Goszakaz is a government forum-exhibition where many companies may represent their products to budget holders of all levels of the Russian federal and regional governments. • The MARBC works to foster the participation of American businesses in the exhibition.

  34. 6th International Nano-Industrial Exhibition “NTMEX 2009” • NTMEX 2009 is a specialized nano-industrial exhibition that covers all of the aspects of nanotechnologies and materials starting from setting the task and finishing with technical implementation and industrial introduction. • The MARBC will be working to increase American participation in the event.

International Forum “High Technology of the 21st Century” • The “High Technology of the 21st Century” international exhibition, held in Russia since 1999, presents technological achievements in the fields of space, radio electronics and communications, information, medicine and biotechnology, chemistry, etc. • The program of the Forum includes seminars, round tables, an innovation competition, an international exhibition, and an international conference. “High Technology of the 21st Century” 2006 in Moscow

Other Events incorporated in MARBC Month in Russia • The Sister-City Expo Conference will commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Russian Cities Association. • RusBuild and MosBuild are two of the largest professional construction exhibitions in Russia, and will highlight the dominating trends in the construction industry. • Finally, Toy Russia will offer an exciting opportunity for American companies to access the Russian toy market as demand for western products rises.

  37. Changes to MARBC Month in Russia • In the past the Moscow International Salon of Innovations & Investment and BIOEURASIA have been included in MARBC Month in Russia. • While MARBC will still be participating in the events, due to scheduling changes the events will no longer be a part of MARBC Month in Russia.

  38. MARBC Cooperation with Universities and Colleges from the Mid-Atlantic Region

MARBC and The Wharton Russia Student Society • The MARBC and The Wharton Russia Student Society have hosted two joint forums discussing different subjects relating to Russian business and culture. The first joint forum was held in November of 2008 and was entitled “The Future of U.S.-Russia Business Ties: Opportunities or Constraints?” and the second was held in February 2009 and was entitled “Russian Culture and Society Abroad”. • The third joint forum event, to be held in November 2009, will have a focus on entrepreneurship.

MARBC Involvement with Temple University • On May 16, 2007 during the Awards Ceremony, the MARBC presented an award for excellence in Russian to a member of the graduating class of Temple University – Jennifer Kondash. Her record of service to the Russian Department has been exceptional. • An award was presented by Benjamin Rifkin, Professor of Russian & Vice Dean for Undergraduate Affairs at Temple University, whose contribution to the expansion of the Russian culture and language program at Temple University has been outstanding.
