Though Indian spirituality knew the Uttarayan (six month of Sun in northern hemisphere and other six months in southern hemisphere), our Rishis (to whom Vedas were revealed when they were in deep meditation) were aware of Shukla Paksha (Bright fortnight) and Krishna Paksha (Dark fortnight) of the lunar month but these were not disseminated to common person for the reasons of Hindus slavery under Mughal and later British rulers and thus the subject was never researched and documented appropriately. In fact, during British rule in India (1858-1947) Sir William Jones, a British Judge and Gaston-Laurent Coeurdoux was a French missionary (France ruled the city of Pondicherry on the South East Coast of India from 1674-1954) discovered the Sanskrit language and it was like discovery of a new planet in the solar system. Today, the world is aware that the Sanskrit is the oldest language of the world. This fact was hidden for fear from Hindus re-uniting and claiming for freedom.
