ABOUT UNIVERSITY The National Institute of Design, NID Gandhinagar, functions as an autonomous body that was started in 2004. The University offers graduation, master's, and Ph.D. degrees to its students in the field of designing. The institute is one of the best designing colleges in India. HISTORY National Institute of Design, NID Gandhinagar, was started in 2004. The government of India, with the assistance of the Ford Foundation and the Sarabhai family, established the National Institute of Design. However, the institution functions as an autonomous body under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and the Government of India. Under the National Institute of Design Act 2014, the National Institute of Design has been declared as the Institution of National Importance by the Act of Parliament. The first National Institute of Design started in Ahmedabad in 1961.
INFRASTRUCTURE Hostel: National accommodation to its students by providing separate hostel facilities to both boys and girls. The hostel accommodation facility is provided for a year, and students have to re-apply each year. Rooms are provided with all basic facilities such as bed, chair, storage space, a desk and so on. Local students are not allowed to apply for hostel accommodation. Institute of Design, NID Gandhinagar provides Sports Complex: Sports are very important for maintaining fitness and for the overall development of the student. As a result, the National Institute of Design provides a badminton court and a basketball court within its campus. In addition to that, the college also provides its students with various opportunities to participate in inter-college and inter-departmental events by representing the college. Moreover, the University also offers its students some unique facilities such as a Mechatronic lab and Painting lab. These labs prove to be very useful for students during research. COURSES Bachelor of Design (B.Des): National Institute of Design, NID Gandhinagar offers a four-year Bachelor of Design degree to its students. The institute provides eight bachelor courses to its students, such as Animation Film Design, Apparel Design, Ceramics, and Glass Design, Exhibition Design, and so on. Additionally, it also provides degrees in Film and Video Communication, Furniture and Interior Design, and Graphic Design. Moreover, the University also provides a bachelor's in Product Design and Textile Design. Master of Design (M.Des): The University offers its students as many as 19 master courses in the field of designing. These courses normally last for 2.5 years. National Institute of Design offers master's studies in numerous areas such as Film and Video Communication, Digital game design, New media design, Universal Design, and so on. Additionally, it offers some interesting master's courses to its students like Lifestyle Accessory Design, Toy & Game Design, Transportation & Automobile Design.
Ph.D. Programs: The National Institute of Design offers a 3-year full-time program to its students. However, the selection for this program is not easy. Each student must go through an assessment of eligibility and merit of the proposal, design research test, and interview.
