  3. ABOUT UNIVERSITY Established in 1967 the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies (CIHTS) is a university and research institution. It was the initiative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. However, it's funded by the Government of India. It provides undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes in Buddhist philosophy and ancient languages, Tibetan medicine and astrology, and Tibetan fine arts. The institution comprises all main Tibetan traditions, including Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and Geluk, and educates students in ancient languages, as well as the abilities required for contemporary research and professional career. Additionally, the institute is a leading research institution, with a sizable team of research researchers and a large number of visitors from other educational establishments in India and across the globe. It serves as a forum for dialogue between Buddhist and non-Buddhist schools of Indian philosophy, between Buddhist and Western intellectuals, and between Buddhist academic scholars.   5. INFRASTRUCTURE Hostel: accommodation demands of students. Hostel living is among the most significant parts of college life, serving as the main residence for the majority of the students. Hence, the university takes care to build hostels in such a way that they optimize comfort, give off a homey feel, and encourage efficiency. The university campus has a hostel to meet the Medical Aid: The Boys Hostel houses the Institute's Allopathic Health Center. It offers all of the amenities of a basic health care facility, as well as a 4-bed ward. Besides, they have a physician, a pharmacy, and other service personnel to offer healthcare services as well as to refer important patients. Sowa Rigpa is an individual faculty member of the Traditional Tibetan Medicinal System at the Institute. The faculty operates an outpatient clinic for consultations as well as a dispensary that sells Tibetan remedies made at the institution's pharmacy. The Sowa Rigpa clinic and dispensary is located in the New Academic Block.

  6. INFRASTRUCTURE Sports: On-campus, CIHTS offers outstanding sports and leisure facilities, including specific fields for football, basketball, badminton, and yoga. All hostels provide gym and fitness centre amenities to help students remain fit and healthy. Yoga classes are also available for students to assist them in maintaining a healthy life. Conference Halls: The university also houses six conference halls where all the meetings, workshops as well as seminars can take place. Guest House: Guesthouse facility is also there in the university for the stay of visitors, guests, etc. It has all the basic amenities such as beds, halls, etc. Library: The Santarakshita library is one of the famous Buddhological and Tibetanological libraries in the world. The institution produces collections of study monographs and restores translated and extensively edited ancient Buddhist texts. This institute's core library has 87000 books and xylographs, as well as 2000 bound editions of periodicals.

  7. COURSES OFFERED The CIHTS Sarnath offers a diverse variety of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. For entry to a college, applicants must take and pass a university’s entrance exam. Applicants must also participate in the relevant exam counselling. On the contrary, the period of the courses differs depending on the course. Admission to all courses is dependent on an entrance exam and also merit-based. However, the length of each course, though, differs based on the course's scope. Now, read below to know about courses at the university: • The university offers BA in various specialisations such as BSRMS, Shastri in Tibetan Fine Arts, Tibetan Jyotish as well as Buddhist Philosophy. A candidate must have a U.M II year from CIHTS to be eligible for this course. • CIHTS offers BEd in Shiksha Shastri, for which a candidate must pass an undergraduate Shastri course from the same university or else have B.A with the Tibetan Language. However, the final selection will be done on the basis of the entrance test.

COURSES OFFERED To enrol in any of the MA courses such as Tibetan Language, Acharya, Tibetan history or Tibetan Jyotish, a candidate must have an undergraduate degree in relevant subjects from CIHTS. The university also offers an 18 months MPhil programme in Vishistacharya for which a student must have Acharya or any other relevant degree. However, the final selection is on the basis of an entrance test. Lastly, the university has three PhD programs in Vidyavaridhi for which students can directly apply after completing their MPhil degree. • • •
