They are the doors to our inner body. These 9 openings are: 1. Two Eyes 2. Two Ears 3. Two Nostrils 4. One Mouth 5. One Anus 6. One Vagina or penis In Sanskrit these 9 holes are called ‘nava dwara’. ‘Nava’ meaning 9 and ‘Dwara’ meaning gate or door. All these 9 holes breathe, also open and close as you breathe. Here is an ancient Ayurvedic treatment or ritual to lubricate the human body internally: You must apply 2 drops of plain ghee or oil to these 9 openings and drink ghee 5ml to 10ml atleast once a week. Let’s take a closer look at these nine openings/holes and explore how you can lubricate your body both internally and externally. This is an ayurvedic treatment. We talk about it in detail during the 4-weeks Ayurveda Course. Lubricating the 9 holes in our body is always an exciting topic of discussion during the ayurveda classes. So, let’s get into it. Case-Study of Michelle Case Study of Michelle The nine holes: Two Eyes Two Ears Two Nostrils One Mouth One Vagina / Penis Bene?ts of Lubricating the 9 openings a. Balancing the 3 doshas b. Removing Toxins (Ama) c. E?cient Functioning of Sensory Organs d. Smooth elimination of waste through Excretory Organs Case Study of Michelle Michelle came to study the Ayurveda Course at the Aithein School. Michelle: a 35-year-old yoga teacher who had always been passionate about health and wellness. However, over the past year, she noticed recurring issues with dry skin, irritated eyes, and occasional digestive discomfort. Despite her commitment to a healthy diet and regular yoga practice, these nagging issues did not go away. During the ayurvedic course at Aithein Healing School in Goa, India, Michelle was introduced to the ancient Ayurvedic practice of lubricating the nine openings of the body. Intrigued by the concept and eager to resolve her issues holistically, she decided to give it a try. The Ayurvedic Perspective In Ayurveda, the nine openings (also known as Navadwara) are the key gateways through which energy, ?uids, and waste ?ow in and out of the body. These include the two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, the mouth, the anus, and the genitalia. Ayurveda teaches that proper lubrication of these openings ensures the smooth functioning of the body’s vital processes and helps maintain overall balance. When these openings become dry or blocked, it can lead to discomfort, physical imbalances, and energy stagnation. Oils such as ghee, sesame oil, and speci?c herbal-infused oils are traditionally used to lubricate and nourish these vital points. Lubricate your Two Eyes Ayurveda suggests: it is better to put ghee than oil. Simply because – Ghee is highly nourishing and it e?ectively lubricates the eyes. It has the quality of taking away the dryness of your eyes and keeps your vision in balance. But if you don’t like the smell of Ghee, no problem. Ayurveda o?ers a solution for it. If you’d prefer not to put ghee in your eyes then coconut or sesame oil are your best options. Lubricate your Two Ears Two drops of warm sesame oil is the best for the ears, it keeps ear clean and ear wax in balance. If sesame oil does not work for you, then in summer you can put coconut oil and in winter mustard oil. Lubricate your Two Nostrils It does not matter you put ghee or oil. Both works best for the nose. It prevents the nose from drying out and keeps the nasal passage clean. One Mouth Drink ghee or oil 5 to 10ml empty stomach in the morning and it make the ?rst nourishing juice and lubricates all the tissues. You can read more on drinking ghee on my blog: Drinking Ghee on Empty Stomach One Vagina / Penis Genital is a sensitive part of the body, try out what works for you. But you can apply only plain ghee or oil when you wake up in the morning or before going to bed. Lubricating these 9 openings (or 9 doors) makes all sensory organs more ef?cient. Our sensory organs acquire knowledge through these nine holes, and enhances overall health. Gagori Mitra Bene?ts of Lubricating the 9 holes (9 doors) Lubricating the 9 holes (9 doors) has many bene?ts. These are mentioned below: a. Balancing the 3 Doshas The key to maintaining a good health is achieved by maintaining a balance among the 3 Doshas, according to Ayurveda. By lubricating the 9 holes in your body, you are primarily balancing your Vata Dosha. Vata dosha, the dosha which is mainly responsible for dryness and roughness in your body. When you lubricate the 9 openings, you are preventing the Vata Dosha from getting aggravated. A basic knowledge of vata dosha teaches us that aggravation of vata dosha can lead to dry hair, dry joints, dry skin, dryness of eyes, dry mouth and many other issues. b. Removing toxins (Ama) The body’s openings play a vital role in its detoxi?cation process. For example, the nostrils and the sinus can help to remove the excess  mucous in the body. Another example is that of the colon. Lubrication of the colon helps in the bowel movements. And anyone who has been actively involved in maintaining their health knows very well that regular and e?cient bowel movements are critical for not only removing toxins from the colon, but also maintaining a good health. You might have even heard the proverb “Your gut is your second brain”. c. Ef?cient functioning of Sensory Organs Our primary sense organs are eyes, ears, nose and mouth. Lubricating these sense organs ensure that these organs function optimally. For instance, if your eyes are lubricated, they won’t feel dry and will be less prone to irritation. Similarly, if your ears are well lubricated, they will produce a proper balance of wax and wont get dry and itchy from the inside. The e?ect of this is you will be able to hear clearly. If we were to discuss about the e?ect of lubrication on your nasal passages: keeping your nasal cavities lubricated provides protection from allergies. d. Smooth elimination of waste through Excretory Organs Improving overall health and well-being According to ayurveda, lubricating the ori?ces/openings is a preventive measure. This is a vital way to keep a human body functioning to its optimum level, thus promoting longevity and good health. Once you make this Ayurvedic ritual a part of your life, it will remove Vata (locked air) and Ama (toxins) from your body.
