  2. What is Phlebitis? An inflammation known as phlebitis or thrombophlebitis can lead to the formation of a blood clot in a vein, commonly in your leg. The condition is referred to as superficial phlebitis when it affects a vein near the surface of your skin. Deep vein thrombosis is the medical term for it when it involves a deeper vein (DVT).A blood clot in a deep vein may get loose in deep vein thrombosis and move through your bloodstream to your lungs.
