  1. The Role of Family in Preventing Drug Abuse According to a survey in 2013, high school students in the U.S. used 22.7% marijuana against 16.3% cigarettes, which is a clear indication of abuse. About 60% of teens abusing prescription drugs in the United States, source them free from friends and family members. Since charity begins at home it is absolutely crucial of a family in influencing any action of the child. A study of teen inmates in drug rehab centers would reveal how important is the role of a family in preventing drug abuse in children. To prevent a child from ending up in treatment centers for drug addiction, we as a family need to take up responsibility and do our part in earnest. Let us look at what all measures we can initiate to prevent a child from abusing drugs: Love and affection: A family that fosters love and affection gifts the child a strength for life. No amount of haranguing can motivate a child but only genuine love and care. Children are very intelligent and receptive to understand true love and affection. Children showered with enough love are never inclined to experiment with drugs. Inculcate good habits: Spend quality time with your children and make them imbibe good habits. Motivate a child to get participate in hobbies like music, painting, and other art & craft stuff. Not only do they develop concentration and attention span in children but also keep them away from drugs abuse. Motivate to take up sports: Those who are physically active feel less inclined towards drugs, be it children or adults. Teach your child the importance of exercise and help him/her take active parts in sports. Being physically active is in sharp contrast to abusing drugs.

  2. Be their role model: Example is always better than precept. To motivate your children, you have to set an example and be the inspiration who they look up to. If you have had any vices and drug abuse history yourself, it is rudimentary to get rid of them first. Teach them values: Any kind of abuse is nothing but a lack of exhibiting values by one. Always teach your child about respect, humility, the importance of knowledge, cleanliness, discipline, a value of education etc. Instil in them a feeling of hope about life and paint a colorful picture. All these would go a long way in keeping them away from drug abuse. Always keep a tab: Despite all measures you cannot take chances and need to keep a tab on your child, always. This would ensure that your child is not doing anything wrong and everything is perfect. Keep prescription drugs away from the reach of children and closely monitor who they are hanging out with. These basic measures, if adopted by a family, would definitely make sure that it does not have to visit any treatment centers for drug addiction.
