Can Snorting of Baby Shampoo as Nasal Rinse Help in the Prevention of COVID-19? In the March of 2020, the World Health Organization declared a pandemic which was the first big event of the 21st century that would affect each and every living soul on the planet Earth. In fact not just humans, it would affect economies, climate and fates of so many people on so many different levels that it's just too convoluted to comprehend. This truth was quite evident soon after the pandemic hit us with a wrecking force. Virologists, Physicians, Rhinologists, Pulmonologists and every other doctor was fighting hard to understand the effects COVID-19 was having on the body and were trying desperately to come up with ways to treat patients of varying degrees. COVID-19 can affect the lungs, heart, blood vessels, liver, stomach and kidneys fatally. In order to curb the full force of the attack, doctors were keen on focusing on the starting point of the spread which is our nose. The SARS-COV-2 gains a strong base by latching on to the nasal cells making it the key part of the body for all kinds of experiments and theories. Doctors were keen on finding ways to slow or even stop the invasion right there in the nose. All kinds of theories were rising but the one that really stood out and grabbed the attention of the panic-stricken people was snorting baby shampoo or diluted soap baby as a nasal rinse to kill the virus or prevent it from reaching the much more vulnerable, lungs. Baby Shampoo and Nasal Rinse Before I get to the studies related to the effectiveness of the baby shampoo or soap baby used as nasal rinse, I first need you to understand where it all originated from. The idea may sound absurd, dangerous or even downright outrageous to listen at first but Rhinologists- the doctors of nose and sinuses treatment have been using and suggesting baby shampoo, organic bar soaps and soap baby as nasal rinse for years. As compared to other nasal rinses which are basically saline water solutions don’t have the same efficacy as the solutions that have a few drops of the baby shampoo mixed in them. The reason for the baby shampoo doing wonders is due to its composition of ingredients and cleansing agents that are way more effective against bacteria and viruses. They dissolve the protective membrane of the virus or bacteria and destroy the nucleus inside of each cell that doesn’t allow the virus or bacteria to grow or mutate. Even though baby shampoo has proven its worth against viruses, it still hasn't proved its worth against COVID-19 virus. Baby Shampoo and the Prevention of COVID-19 When the COVID-19 started a rampage in our lives, researchers, scientists and virologists around the globe started doing clinical trials on various possibilities that could save the human race. One such research was conducted in the Penn State College of Medicine at Pennsylvania, where the researchers took a human strain of the novel
Coronavirus that has similar genetics as SARS-COV-2. These strains were treated with various agents such as Johnson’s and Johnson’s baby shampoo to check the effectiveness of each. These treated strains were then interacted with cultured human cells to monitor the growth of the virus. The research showed that the solution containing 1% of the baby shampoo was 99.9% effective against the growth of the virus. But these tests were done in a very controlled environment of the labs and the true efficacy of the baby shampoo can only be proved if human trials are done in a not-so- controlled environment. These tests are currently in clinical trials and the sure shot results will be here by June of 2022, so let’s hope for the best. Baby Shampoo is a Prevention not a Cure! Prevention is better than cure is something that we have heard for years but to think that a prevention measure is the cure to the problem is just plain negligence and stupidity. Even if the study of baby shampoo being approved as a nasal rinse for preventing COVID-19 it in no way means that it’s the cure or you can put your guard down by not doing social distancing or ditching face masks. Yes, it can significantly reduce the virus load but it also depends on how much you’re exposed and for how long. Another thing to keep in mind is that the nasal rise will not be effective if the virus has already left the nose area but it can surely kill the remaining virus and save others from catching it. Why Baby Shampoo and not any other? In the end, many people resort to the available shampoo at their homes after reading half of the article, so please don’t do that. There is a reason that the emphasis is on the baby shampoo due to what it contains and what it doesn’t. Baby shampoos are mild, soft and tear-free so even they pose less threat than any other shampoo.
