All That You Should Know About Stalking

1 out of every 6 women has experienced stalking in some way or the other. In addition to

this scary stat, it is also noted that persons aged 18-24 years experience the highest rate of

stalking. To be honest, the 1 out of 6 is just an official figure. If we take into account of the

experiences which are not documented, it might be way higher than that. In the wake of the

recent #metoo campaign, several women came out and shared their experiences all over

the world. A simple search of #metoo will show up several harrowing experiences. If you

are a man, the stats for you are 1 in 19, BTW. In case you are a little too oblivious about the

impending danger, just ask a close person of the opposite gender and you have a firsthand

experience that will most certainly come to be heartbreaking. So, what is stalking and what

are the laws around it? How can a Harris County criminal defense attorney help in this

case? As it turns out, there’s a lot to it. This blog is the first part of a series of blogs on

stalking.

What is Stalking?

As per the Sexual Assault Prevention & Awareness Center (SAPAC) of the University of

Michigan, “Stalking is defined as a willful course of conduct involving repeated or

continuing harassment made against the expressed wishes of another individual, which

causes that individual to feel emotional distress including fear, harassment, intimidation or

apprehension.” Stalking is perilous for the victim and punishable by law and the stories we

have heard testify the same.

who can be a stalker

Who can be a stalker?

The short answer to that is anyone. Literally, anyone with an obsession can turn out to be a

stalker. Anyone from an unknown person, an acquaintance, a former partner to your

unassuming boy next door can be a stalker. The stalkers try to control the victim through

several intimidating behavioral attributes. The state of mind can be anything from

obsessive love to obsessive hate for a stalker. They might just follow the victim for days and

weeks on and off. As per the Texas Attorney General, “A stalking victim feels a reasonable

fear of bodily injury or death to self or to a family or household member or damage to

property. Stalking can be perpetrated by the stalker or by someone acting on her/his

behalf. Stalking can take the form of verbal threats or threats conveyed by the stalker's

conduct, threatening mail, property damage, surveillance of the victim, or by following the

victim.”

Role of a Harris County criminal defense attorney

A Harris County criminal defense attorney can help you in ways more than one when it

comes to stalking. In case you are reporting of being stalked, the legal matters will need an

experienced attorney to bring light to the justice. Moreover, the emotional consolation and

sense of assurance of the legal department doubles up as a confidence booster.
