  1. Hypothermia – Causes and Treatment • Hypothermia– Causes and Treatment Active Wellness Clinical Care Team

  2. Hypothermia – Introduction What is Hypothermia? • When you are in cold weather, especially with high wind chill and high humidity or in a cold, damp environment for long periods of time, your body’s control mechanisms may not be able to regulate your body temperature. • When you lose more heat than your body can produce, this can lead to hypothermia, which is when your body temperature is below 95F (35C). Wet or inadequate clothing Falling into cold water Not wearing a hat during cold weather

  3. Hypothermia – Causes What causes Hypothermia? • Hypothermia can be caused by a few things, like:- • Wearing clothes that are too cold for the weather. • Being out in the cold for too long. • Not being able to get out of your wet clothes or get to a warm place. • Falling into the water, like a boating accident, or living in a cold house with no heat or air conditioning.

  4. Hypothermia – Symptom Signs and symptoms of hypothermia include:- • Hypothermia can manifest itself in a variety of ways, including:- • Shivering • Mumbling or slurred speech, • Slow, shallow breathing • A weak pulse • Clumsiness or coordination • Drowsiness or a lack of energy • Confusion or memory loss, and loss of consciousness (in infants). • Additionally, bright red and cold skin may be present.

  5. Hypothermia – Action to be taken Note :- • Hypothermia is a condition in which individuals experience a gradual decline in mental and physical abilities, resulting in a lack of awareness of the need for emergency medical care. • This condition is most common in elderly individuals, infants and young children, as well as those who are very thin. • Additionally, individuals with mental health issues such as Alzheimer's disease, alcohol consumption, homelessness or vehicle breakdown can increase the risk of developing hypothermia. • Other factors that can contribute to this condition include malnutrition, cardiovascular diseases and hypothyroidism.

  6. Hypothermia – Action to be taken Note :- • When someone has hypothermia, it's important to call emergency medical help and keep an eye on their breathing. If it stops or looks slow or shallow, start CPR right away. • Move them out of the cold if it's too cold inside, cover their head and insulate them from the ground. Take off any wet clothes and replace them with something warm and dry. • Don't use direct heat, like hot water or a heating pad, to warm them. Instead, use warm compresses on the center of their body, like their head, neck, and chest. • Don't try to warm their arms or legs - the heat from their arms and legs will push cold blood back towards their heart, lungs, and brain, which can cause a drop in their core body temperature. • Don't give them alcohol, but if they're vomiting, offer them a warm nonalcoholic drink. Don't massage or rub their skin, as it can cause serious damage.

  7. Hypothermia – When to call a doctor Call for emergency when:- • If you're feeling cold and your body temperature is too low, it's a medical emergency and you need to get to the hospital right away. • Call 911 or go straight to the emergency room if you have any of these symptoms.
