  2. Heat Cramps – Introduction What is Heat Cramps? • Heat cramps are when your muscles go into spasms that can be really painful. They usually happen when you're doing a lot of exercise in hot conditions, and the spasms can be more severe and longer than usual. Not drinking enough fluids can also make them worse. • The muscles that are most affected by heat cramps are usually your calves, hands, belly, and back, but they can also affect any muscle group you're working on.

Heat Cramps – Causes What causes Heat Cramps? • Heat cramps don't know what's causing them, but it looks like it's something to do with your electrolytes. • Your muscles need different minerals for different things, and if they're not in balance, it can lead to problems. • Sweat has a lot of sodium in it, and if you're drinking fluids that don't have enough sodium, it can cause hyponatraemia, which is a really bad condition. • To help with this, some factories have made sure their workers don't get heat cramps by giving them fluids that have salt in them.

Drink some clear juice or a sports drink that has electrolytes in it. • Do some stretching and massage of the muscle group that's affected. • Don't do anything strenuous for a few hours or longer after the cramps go away. • If they don't go away after an hour or two, call your doctor.

Heat Cramps – When to call a doctor Call for emergency when:- • Individuals with high • Weak pulse rates and rapid • Shallow breathing • Particularly when associated with hypertension or low blood pressure, as well as those who are unconscious, disoriented or have a high body temperature • Those with warm, dry skin with elevated or decreased blood pressure and hyperventilation.
