Context 2016: • Incidents of hate graffiti on several places of worship in Ottawa. • US election – apparent increase in populist sentiment 2017: Quebec City mosque shooting A number of local leaders come together to discuss: • High-level efforts • Address roots of hate and violence • Providing average person opportunity to contribute positively • Increase Ottawa’s overall sense of tolerance, safety, belonging.
Convening Early 2017, UW convened stakeholders to pursue: 1) Exploring a common entityto support grassroots responses 2) Preparing for a coordinated community leadership for collective response to prevent and respond to future 3) Finding ways to proactively address hate crime/violence 4) Determine success – shared measurement system
