  1. Baths For The Disabled – Options For many people there comes a time in their life when normal movement is no longer a given as the body simply is no longer strong or supple enough to enable free, easy, unhindered movement. So, you get a walking stick, while some have to get around in wheelchairs or with a walking frame, for example. All of these ensure a certain independence, and yet, when it is time to take a bath, people struggle. Baths, whether from the Victorian era, or more recently, have high edges to negotiate when you want to get in. The same applies when you get out: you are scared you might slip, lose your balance, fall and hurt yourself. This is why so many disabled people, even though they may be less disabled than many others, get helpers, carers or their spouse to assist them, often leaving them to feel less confident and unsure of themselves. Such issues can affect one’s sense of self-worth and are never easy to come to terms with. So, what are the options then? Some people may opt for the so-called bath lift; however, these offer only limited relief since they are suited for people that can sit on the bath’s edge and lift their legs with ease to get them over the edge, and into the bath. Another option is a hoist, which requires mechanical features and, often, the assistance of a helper. For those that can climb in and out with no problems, but find getting up after having been seated to be tough, a bath seat may provide the answer. These seats come with feet that do not move around while you are taking your bath. Some of them can also swivel from side to side, making getting in and out somewhat easier. All of the above offer help, but come with their own limitations too: you either need to be strong enough to operate some of them on your own, or you still need help. A solution that has gained tremendous ground in recent years is the – by now – well-known walk-in bathtub. These tubs have a walk-in door on the side, allowing you to open the door, walk or step in, then close it behind you – after which you fill it with water. The great benefit of these walk-in tubs is that you can access them (and get out again) from a level surface, the floor. You no longer have to negotiate difficult edges and angles to lower yourself into the bathtub. You simply walk in, close the door, find a comfortable position and turn open the faucet. Even though every wheelchair user may not be able to make use of this option unassisted, some can, especially those with stronger arms and hands. There are some good options available in this regard.

  2. Service providers in many countries now advertise their services in this regard and offer the public choices of such tubs, some with special features too, for example hydro massage jets that come built into the bath. These, obviously, are the top-of-the-range tubs and meant for someone that is happy to acquire a tub that offers more. These tubs make the user’s life so much easier, since moving around on their own becomes much simpler; you no longer have the need to get someone to assist. These tubs are available in many countries, also all over the United States where more and more people than ever before now consider them as their preferred option when they need a tub that they can access easily, and after the bath get out again without help. They are available from leading service providers who will install them for you, and also service them from time to time when necessary.
