  2. Asbestos Danger Still Lingers in Gold Coast Serious cases of asbestos contamination in Gold Coast public buildings can still be found today. An audit revealed that many school buildings contain some form of asbestos-containing material (ACM). Furthermore, large amounts of illegally dumped ACM waste were found in numerous locations throughout Queensland. These incidents indicate that asbestos is not merely a problem of the industrial past and continuing awareness of its dangers is just as important today as it was decades ago.

  3. Asbestos Is Not A Problem Of The Past For many years, ACM was widely used as a building material. Many old buildings in Queensland may still have ACM and thus pose serious health risk to the occupants of the house. Thanks to a sustained campaign over the past three decades, most people are now quite familiar with the dangers posed by fibrous materials. Most people are now aware that they could cause cancer although many might not be well versed with the details or the severity of the risks that it poses.

Rules for removing and transporting asbestos • A licensed commercial contractor must be engaged to remove: • Non-commercial non-friable asbestos 250 kilograms or more (class B licence), • Any amount of commercial non-friable asbestos (class B licence), and • Any amount of friable asbestos (class A licence)

  6. Home owners who remove less than 10 square metres of non-friable asbestos do not need to obtain a certificate under regulations administered by Queensland Health • Home owners who transport less than 250 kilograms of non-friable asbestos do not require an environmental authority for the transport of regulated waste (Environmental Protection Regulation 2008 section 57).   7. Asbestos Removal Work An asbestos removal licence is held by a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU). Workers carry out licensed asbestos removal work on behalf of or for the PCBU who holds the licence. Individual workers do not hold an asbestos licence but must meet certain training requirements.
