  1. Why Migrate Databases from Oracle to Microsoft SQL Server Oracle database has been the workhouse of organizations around the world for decades. However, as businesses and their IT infrastructure grow exponentially, what weighs on everybody’s mind is the cost-effectiveness of the Oracle database. It is here that Microsoft SQL Server has proved its value.

  2. Differences between Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databasesBefore moving to the reasons for migrating databases from Oracle to SQL Server, it is necessary to understand the primary differences between the two. • There is a change in values before commit in SQL Server while it is not so in Oracle

  3. • SQL Server can be installed only on MS Windows Server while Oracles works on multiple platforms. • SQL Server supports partial and incremental backups while in Oracle it is full, incremental, and differential backups.   • SQL offers schemas in each database while Oracle supports multiple schemas with the instance.

  4. Now, what are the benefits of migrating databases from Oracle to SQL Server?Benefits of Oracle to SQL Server database migration• The main benefit here is the cost with SQL Server having more affordable license costs than Oracle. SQL Server is also easy to operate and does not need constant supervision from DBAs. Operating costs are kept under control in SQL Server through databases consolidation, compression of data, and virtualizing servers.

  5. • Unlike other databases that need a command-line configuration for installation, SQL Server can be installed easily through the Setup Wizard. • Security of data is ensured by SQL Server through rigid user access and tools for permission management. • Unlike Oracle, SQL Server does not have a unique license cost structure. There are several editions of SQL Server and organizations can choose one that is most cost-effective and friendly for them. For example, large organizations use the Enterprise SQL Server edition while small to mid-sized businesses, use the Standard SQL Server edition which is of lower costs. At the basic level is the Express SQL Server version with limited features. • A critical reason for Oracle to SQL Server database migration is the data recovery and restoration feature. SQL Server recovers lost data and restores them with advanced tools, replacing entire databases if required. This is carried out through the core node of the database engine, permitting running queries and data storage of transactions, files, and indexes of users. Even before a transaction commit, log records are entered into the disk. In the case of an outage in the operating system, database engine instance, or even the server hardware, the transaction logs are used by the instance after the restart to take up the transactions from the point of the system failure and start afresh.

  6. • Data security is one of the important reasons for database migration from Oracle to SQL Server as the SQL Server has several complex encryption algorithms and safety mechanisms in place. These are some reasons for Oracle to SQL Server database migration.
