An ultrasound is a noninvasive and painless imaging technique that uses reflected high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of structures in the body. Ultrasound waves are produced in the examining room by a machine known as a transducer that works in the same way as a sonar, sending out high frequency sound waves which bounce off tissues and structures within the patient's body and then reflect back to the transducer where it is converted into electrical signals that can be interpreted by an ultrasound technician or radiologist reading the scan on a video monitor.
