Multiple Myeloma & it's Medicines

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a type of cancer that forms in plasma cells (also named mature B-lymphocytes), which are a sort of WBC that is made in the bone marrow. There are certain promising medicines available for multiple myeloma, which may include: Bortezomib, Lenalidomide, Ixazomib, Carfilzomib, Thalidomide, Pomalidomide, Daratumumab, and Elotuzumab. The goals of treatment for multiple myeloma are to eliminate the myeloma cells, control the tumor growth, pain, and allow patients to have a quality of life (QoL).

  2. What is Multiple Myeloma? Multiple Myeloma is a hematological malignancy that affects Plasma cells. Plasma cells are the type of WBC (White blood cells) that are found in the bone marrow. Bone marrow is a soft tissue found in most of the bones. Bone marrow is the primary site of cell production. Hematopoietic stem cells can develop in various types of cells e.g. red blood cells that carry oxygen through your body, the platelets that help with blood clotting, and the white blood cells that fight infections. Multiple Myeloma is also known as Plasma Cell Myeloma.

  3. Confirmatory test for diagnosis of Multiple Myeloma is done on the bases of  • Urine tests.  Analysis of Urine might show M Protein. M Protein is also referred to as Bence Jones Proteins • Blood tests. Analysis of blood can reveal • Bone Marrow Examination • Imaging tests. X-ray, MRI, CT or positron emission tomography (PET).
