From waking up to crashing waves to bonfires on the beach, camping on the beach sounds like the ideal escape from the city. But while it is full of romantic notions, there are many obstacles that can get in the way of your next beach adventure.
When you double down on camping and sunbathing on the beach, you have to do double the preparation. You have the option of camping by car on the beach with designated sites or camping on the primitive beach, walking or traveling on four wheels.
Know before you go • Everyone has to do the basics. While there are no private beaches in some places, like Revdanda, many parks still require permits to stay overnight. If you are staying at designated sites, check ahead to find reservations for you and your crew.
Where to go camping on the beach • Location means more than just which beach to choose. Knowing the beach is essential in choosing where to camp in a primitive camp, but some self-service parks, like Lake Powell, are also open sites for you to choose from. Try to find trees for Revdanda beach camping or just where sand meets vegetation. This will offer you a warmer place, with protection against the winds. Additionally, vegetation usually rises above the tide line, giving you another level of security. • Where also means when in terms of camping on the beach. As mentioned, it is popular because it is amazing to have bonfires on the beach or to surf right outside your accommodation. Try it in the off-season months, like May or September. They may be a bit cooler, but they offer more solitude and privacy, giving you the feeling of escape.
The dunes are to look at • Camping on the beach also means respecting the coastal fauna in the dunes. Sand dunes are home to sensitive ecosystems and many national and state parks are trying to keep people away from them in order to regenerate natural flora and fauna. • Your average footprint can disrupt what is happening under the sand, so keep sand dunes at a distance. Keep your dogs away from them and leave any driftwood. Returning ecosystems will thank you.
Know the tides • Make sure to check your tides. You can go old school with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration site or get it on your phone with the Tides Near Me app. There is nothing worse than waking up in the dark completely overwhelmed.
The sun sees everything • It goes without saying that preparing for the sun is vital to your beach vacation. With all the studies on melanoma and ozone thinning, this one is pretty obvious. Bring sunscreen (more than SPF 15 for those long days) or get serious with sunscreen that has zinc oxide. • For a sun-proof camp, get umbrellas or a sun shelter to keep cool. If you can, find a camp under a tree to keep cool and free from the sun in the shade. • Even if it's gray and cloudy, a beach is an open space without tree cover that will make your skin rosy. At the very least, bring a baseball cap.
Your guide to the bonfire • Many beach campsites allow fires, but if you're backpacking places like Lost Coast don't because of the high fire hazard resulting from dry grass near the sand. Be sure to do your research; a quick call to the ranger station is an easy way to avoid heavy fines. After all, it could cost you millions of dollars. • If legal, build it closer to your site rather than closer to the water to protect yourself from the wind. Dig a hole and place some stones around it to make the fire light. • You may need to bring firewood if there is a shortage on the beach in Revdanda camping. Around the middle of summer, all the good wood usually disappears. Remember not to take driftwood from the dunes, which can be essential for ecosystem restoration.
Sleeping in the sand • which cools it down at night. It can often be wet too, so bring a tarp to settle down. (A large beach tent may have a built-in tarp at the bottom!) To beat the chill that comes off the sand, put in a few layers, maybe a bedspread or some other blankets. • If you are trying to sleep under the stars, a tarp and most inflatable mats are enough to protect you from the cold below. If you're backpacking, try our lightweight and compact sleeping pads to help you sleep next to the waves. • Do you still want the beauty of the stars but the safety and privacy of a tent? Take off the rain fly for an open skylight and get up with the sun coming through your roof.
Leave the sand on the beach • Sand is the glitter of nature, which means that it literally goes everywhere and it can be impossible to remove it completely. Be wise and clean your feet before entering your store. If you're camping in a car, bring a small bucket with some water to rinse your dogs off. • If you carry a camera or electronic device, be sure to bring covers or cases that prevent sand from getting in. Any grain will grind up your valuables to ruin them faster than expected. • Sand will always find a way (we constantly find dishonest grains of sand in our tents and boots), so shake out your tent and backpack before you leave, and maybe one more time at home before putting it away.
Final Words • Camping on the beach is one of the most relaxing camping experiences you will have outside of town. Months later, you'll be dumping sand out of your pockets and camping gear, but it will be one of the most memorable trips if you plan and do it right.
