  1. Maintenance Tips for Electrical Transformers

  2. Electrical transformers are an important and expensive part of any machinery. Therefore, for optimal performance and longer product life, it is best to perform regular maintenance checks on your machinery. • There are basically two types of transformer maintenance. One is done on a regular basis and the other is done at the time of urgency. If maintenance checks are performed routinely, you may not have to undergo breakdown maintenance and thus save downtime.

  3. There are many different types of maintenance checks that must be performed on a power transformer. These are some of the main transformer maintenance actions that must be carried out:

  4. There are many different types of maintenance checks that must be performed on a power transformer. These are some of the main transformer maintenance actions that must be carried out:

  5. Monthly Transformer Maintenance Checks • The oil level in the oil plug should be checked monthly so that it does not drop below a fixed limit and thus avoid damage due to it. • Keep the breather holes on the silica gel respirator clean to ensure proper breathing at all times. • If your electrical transformer has an oil fill bushing, make sure the oil is filled to the correct level.

  6. Daily Basis Maintenance Checks And Tests • Here are 3 maintenance tests that you should run on your transformer on a daily basis: • MOG (Magnetic Oil Gauge) oil levels in the main tank and the conservator tank. Always keep to keep the oil filled to the desired level in MOG. • Replace the silica gel if its color turns pink. • If any leaks are found, seal them.

  7. Annual Transformer Maintenance Program • Air fans, oil pumps, and other items used to cool a transformer and control circuit should be inspected annually. • Make sure to clean all bushings on your electrical transformer only with a soft cotton cloth annually. • The condition of the OLTC oil should be carefully examined once a year. For that, take an oil sample from the drain valve and test the moisture content (PPM) and dielectric strength (BDV). If the BDV value is low and the PPM value is high, then the oil needs to be replaced. • Be sure to clean the inside of all sort boxes annually. Check the proper functioning of the lighting and space heaters. All control and relay wiring terminal connections should be tightened at least once a year.

  8. All control switches, alarms and relays along with their circuits, the remote tap changer control panel, and the control and relay panel should be cleaned with a suitable cleaning agent. • Examine all pockets for the winding temperature gauge and oil temperature gauge for the required oil level and be sure to refill if necessary. • The correct operation of the Buchholz relay and the press release device should be checked annually. • Be sure to measure the HV Installations resistive value of the ground connection and the rizer should be measured annually with a clamp on the ground resistance meter.

  9. Semi-annual transformer maintenance • Your electrical transformer should be checked every 6 months to determine if it has IFT, DDA, flash point, sludge content, acidity, water content, and dielectric strength, as well as how resistant it is to transformer oil.

  10. Current transformer maintenance • A current transformer is a vital part of any equipment installed in an electrical substation for electrical measurement and protection purposes. The insulation resistance of the CT should be checked annually. • Thermovision scanning of the primary terminals and the top dome of a live CT should be performed annually. • All secondary CT connections should be examined, cleaned and adjusted every year to ensure that the secondary currents have the lowest resistance path. • Although your electrical transformer can continue to function without problems, ongoing damage to electrical vents and a lack of minimal HV and LV maintenance can hasten the inevitable failure of your transformer.

  11. About Us • At Independent Substation Services, we strive to support our customers from the start to the very end, never cutting a corner. Our independent limited company was established in 2011 to offer electrical engineering services such as: maintenance, inspection, installation, testing and commissioning of HV/LV switchgear and transformers and the associated cabling. The INDSS office is located in the South-East of England, in Buckinghamshire. • Website - https://indss.co.uk/ • Transformer Maintenance - https://indss.co.uk/transformer-maintenance/ • HV Installations - https://indss.co.uk/hv-installations/ • HV Engineering Services-https://indss.co.uk/hv-engineering-services/ • HV and LV maintenance - https://indss.co.uk/hv-lv-maintenance/
