Portugal as a nation amended its citizenship act in 2006 which clarified as to who can become a Portuguese citizen. • It requires additional charges to apply for the citizenship of Portugal and this may vary on the type of citizenship that you are opting for. • Side lining the fee charges, you can achieve the Portuguese citizenship by three processes and these are:- • 1. Portuguese descent:- if your mother or your father was from Portugal and you are successfully able to trace your distant to him or her then you will be able to apply for the citizenship. The person who needs the citizenship can even belong to a country which had been colonized by Portugal. • 2. Marriage:- if you marry a person who belongs to Portugal then you can claim the Portuguese citizenship within 3 years. And, • 3. Applying for the Portuguese citizenship:- you can easily become a citizen of Portugal by applying for the citizenship of Portugal(this is only allowed after a stay in Portugal for 6 years). For applying, you need certain documents are needed such as Birth certificate (it is not compulsory but will add details and will help you in the process) and a certificate claiming that you haven't been sentenced to jail in the past three years in Portugal.
