  1. Hydrogen breath Test Hydrogen breath test:  Do not eat slowly digested foods such as beans, bran, or other high-fiber cereals the day before the testing.  Nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours, you may have small sips of water the morning before your test.  Do not smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least 1/2 hour before, or at any time during the test.  Let the Medical Assistant know if you have taken any recent antibiotics and/or therapy or current diarrhea. They can affect the outcome of the test. Lactose breath test: Do not eat slowly digested foods such as beans, bran or other high fiber cereals the day before the testing.   Nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours, and take 12 oz. of milk three hours before the test.  Do not smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least 1/2 hour before, or at any time during the test.
