Hydrogen breath Test Hydrogen breath test: Do not eat slowly digested foods such as beans, bran, or other high-fiber cereals the day before the testing. Nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours, you may have small sips of water the morning before your test. Do not smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least 1/2 hour before, or at any time during the test. Let the Medical Assistant know if you have taken any recent antibiotics and/or therapy or current diarrhea. They can affect the outcome of the test. Lactose breath test: Do not eat slowly digested foods such as beans, bran or other high fiber cereals the day before the testing. Nothing to eat or drink for 12 hours, and take 12 oz. of milk three hours before the test. Do not smoke, sleep, or exercise vigorously for at least 1/2 hour before, or at any time during the test.
