Things to know about Flange Integrity

Technologies have provided bountiful methods to cope with the increasing public and market demand. It also ensures the safety of the people working in risky sectors. Irrespective of such comfort produced by the fast-paced technologies, we should maintain specific protocols while doing our job. Any irresponsible behavior from our side can be deadly. Especially in large-scale industries, a small reckless behavior is enough to ruin the whole industry. The above post is all about the security of flange sealing.

  1. Things to know about Flange Integrity Before moving directly into what flanges are, we need to discuss some crucial sections which come before flanges. Therefore, let us move on to the first and foremost topic, 'Pipes.' What are pipes? In industrial language, pipes are the medium through which any kind of industrial liquid or gas is transported from one place to another. Piping is the whole system of transporting fluids that may be in solid, liquid, or gaseous form. Therefore, we can consider piping to be the broader form of pipes.

  2. Pipe Cutting: The most common forms are as follows - Hot cutting: The hot cutting method is done either by oxy-fuel or plasma. It is a process that includes igniting a metal and then using it to cut a pipe. Cold cutting: Cold cutting is safer than hot cutting. Especially in hazardous working environments, it is the preferable pipe cutting system. It includes pipe beveling as well.

  3. What is a flange? A flange is a metallic plate with holes cut through it for bolts to be attached and with the use of bolting tools the joint integrity of these flanges is maintained..Flanges are usually circular in shape; sometimes, it is seen to be rectangular or oval. The flanges connect the ends of two pipes with the help of bolts and bolting tools. The flanges are attached with the use of nuts and bolts. Therefore, the entire process is just the interconnection among the bolts, nuts, flanges, and pipes. The bolting tools greatly help in this type of heavy industrial work.

  4. How are pipes and flanges connected? We have already discussed earlier that flanges help to connect two pipes. The flanges are fastened to the pipes in different methods. One of such methods is 'Threading.' Threading is the process through which the threaded flange is put into the tube. This method is applicable in both lower temperature applications and hazardous applications.

  5. FLANGE SEALING: METHODS AND PROCEDURE TO SEAL A FLANGE Gaskets: Gaskets provide an effective leak-free seal. The connecting area of two pipes might not be perfectly sealed, which might be hazardous. Gaskets are used. It plays a colossal role in perfectly sealing the area of the pipe connecting zone. Selection of a proper gasket is necessary, such as: • Resistance to temperature • It's elasticity • Thickness of the gasket • Flange vibration

  6. Flange face: A flange face is an effective tool for the sealing areas of a flange. They are put together when the flanges are bolted together, and the gasket is compressed between the flanges. The friction between the gasket and the flange facing holds the gasket in place. Tightening of the flange bolts increases the compression in the gaskets, increasing friction between the flange facing and the gaskets. Bolted flanges: The flanges are provided with threads that help them join two pipes via bolts and seal them with a gasket.

  7. Bolt tightening: The stability and well-being of the joint depend on the pressure produced by the bolts. Proper bolting can be looked after by taking adequate care of the tightening technique, done by different torque wrenches. Friction control: Not only torque wrenches but also take special care of thread friction by lubricating them whenever needed. Flange inspection: Flange sealings must be inspected regularly. Certain damages might seem small but, if ignored, can cause a severe issue. Therefore, the slightest Damage should be inspected and fixed.

  8. Types of damages in flange sealing: • Damage through scratch: This Damage is primarily narrow but can be profound. It is created across the flanges by sharp objects. • Damage by Dents: This Damage generally occurs due to a collision in the joining section of the two pipes.

  9. Conclusion: Technologies have provided bountiful methods to cope with the increasing public and market demand. Content Sources :- ABSGroup
