Alzheimer’s Disease: Know it to Fight it AD accounts for 60 to 80 percent of dementia cases. It's a chronic neurodegenerative disorder of the older (>65 yrs old ) that develops slowly over time using a clinical course of 2 to 10 years prior to a terminal event. Paradoxically, the disease can impact patients in their 40s or 50s if it's known as young-onset AD. As the disease progresses, patients have disorientation in comfortable surroundings with pathfinding issues, difficulties in communication, alteration in behavior, and difficulty in handling financial affairs, family activities and tendency to become lost in conversations. Gradually patients eventually become withdrawn and apathetic, staying aloof and alone the majority of the time. The behavior changes cause symptoms of hallucinations and delusions that might be a specific issue for family members. Finally, patients eventually become bed-ridden, incontinent, and unresponsive (vegetative state) with death occurring because of a terminal occasion like chest or urine infection. Genetics plays a significant role, especially in those where AD runs in families. Besides genes, mid-life hypertension, smoking, and brain injuries, etc can also
be known risk factors. Pathologically, it's mainly considered as a result of deposition of the protein named AMYLOID from the brain tissue and because of lack of brain neurotransmitter ACETYLCHOLINE. Advanced imaging techniques such as MRI, PET, SPECT assist in assessing the patients in the first stages. Additionally, CSF evaluation for biomarkers aids in identification of individuals in pre-clinical phases. TREATMENT:- There Is Absolutely No Cure for the AD. But medications are available which offer symptomatic advantage and slow down the progression of a disorder. Acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are the drugs commonly utilized within an AD that help slow down the decline in memory and other intellectual skills. Additionally, many antipsychotic medications help to relieve the behavioural issues that are a source of distress to both caregivers and patients. Additionally, psychotherapy aids in handling the neuropsychiatric issues such as stress, depression and mood disorders linked to the disease. Changes in the living environment of this individual may increase patient safety and decrease the burden on caregivers. Examples of such modifications include adhering to simplified patterns, preventing frequent shifts in dwelling area, putting off security locks, labelling household things to signal the individual and accompanying the individual whenever he's outside of the house or in an unfamiliar environment. Though AD has no treatment at the moment, early identification and appropriate management in the hands of a specialist may go a long way in enhancing the standard of life of their individual and diminishing health care burden.
