  1. Having Your Eyes Tested Is A Straight Forward Process Millions of people world-wide will, at some stage or other, need to go for an eye test or exam. The moment one realises that one’s vision is not as good as it once was, it is time to see an optician for an eye exam. It may happen that you first visit your GP with this concern; he/she will then immediately refer you to an optician if this is not the route you have followed in the first place. But, one does not only have to see the optician in case of problems: much like you would visit the dentist or gynaecologist at scheduled intervals, it is advised to see the optician from time to time, normally every year or two especially if you do wear glasses or contact lenses. Opticians are eye-care professionals that test a person’s vision and then prescribe the best treatment to assist them to see properly once more. In most cases it does not go beyond the eye exam and a prescription for glasses or the different contact lenses which are available today. Should the optician establish there is a possibility of eye disease, or cataracts, for example, then he/she will immediately refer the patient to the next professional, the optometrist that offers more specialised care or service, or even an ophthalmologist, the eye specialist that performs surgeries to correct impaired vision. The patient will undergo a thorough exam that tests the eyes for any defects that may cause impaired or limited vision, or vision that has, over time, deteriorated, and then the best treatment – often glasses or contact lenses – is prescribed. For more serious issues the optician will refer their patient to another professional. Some opticians are actually able to offer advanced services, more than what the basic service such as testing and dispensing glasses or contact lenses requires since they are also trained and well-educated optometrists, the professional that treats eye disease and various issues that the optician does not. This makes it much easier for the patient to place their confidence in this professional, knowing that he/she is a specialised professional that acts as both optician and optometrist. The exam, or basic eye test, is a straightforward, painless exam during which time a good, well-experienced optician will perform different tests to ensure they prescribe the relevant treatment and any other suggestions as may be deemed necessary. Different tests will be performed such as, for example, a vision acuity test that tests each eye separately for its vision, as well as a refraction eye exam to test the lens strength you need to see properly. There are various other eye exams that a good optician may carry out to ensure that their patients are offered the best services and most appropriate lenses and glasses, for example comprehensive tests, colour tests, diagnostic tests to find out if there is any sign of eye disease present, for example. A good optician offers these and further exams, and he/she knows what to prescribe – or who to refer the patient to in case of more urgent matters. Opticians are professionals that work in an environment similar to what optometrists and ophthalmologists offer, in other words in an environment with optical equipment to be able to establish what patients need. In addition to that they work in an environment where equipment may be used to cut glass; certain chemicals may be involved for these processes, and they will be able to offer patients different choices of glasses, frames or contact lenses. The best ones offer great services and attention to their patients, they work with modern equipment and they are able to offer patients different choices and a promise that what they do and offer, will improve their vision and offer them peace of mind. Good opticians are available in many centres. Do a bit of research and find the best ones for that time when you need this type of service.
